Hello
It depends on how you ghost the drive. If you ghost the drive to another hard drive, say a second IDE drive (or whatever) using the 'copy my entire hard drive' system, then yes it will copy the partitions exactly as they exist. At that point you could recover the DRIVE overwriting the target partitions and you would have exactly the same structure, by using the 'copy my drive' to restore. If however you ghost it by PARTITION, it will only recover the partition and not the entire drive as it then exists overwriting the target partition only. Does that make sense?
Thank you for the clear and prompt reply. However, when I try the program I still don't understand.
I only have one disk with two partitions.
If I choose "tasks" (the third item from the top in the menu-column on the left of Norton Ghost 12), the second sub-item will be "backup copy once" (my translations back to English). (I get the same result as using "handle backupcopies" in "home"-window.) here I can use the control key and choose BOTH partitions.
If I, on the other hand, choose "tools" (the fourth item in the menu-column) the fourth sub-item will be "copy my harddisk" However, HERE I CANNOT USE THE CONTROL KEY TO CHOOSE BOTH PARTITIONS OF MY DISK. The first panel of this guide also tells me that "you cannot use this guide to copy to removable or network medium." (I would like to store on external disk.)
So, sorry for not getting it yet. I have probably missed something basic. I don't understand how I include both partitions of the disk into my backupcopy using "copy my harddisk".
Thanks for the assistance.
If you have a disk with multiple partitions, you’ll need to create an image of each partition separately. Please let me know fi you have any other questions. Thanks!
Thanks lot. I apologize that i have not yet fully understood.
(I plan to install Ubuntu/Linux as dual boot with the residing Vista system. This will therefore change both MasterBootRecord - new bootloader - and also make new partitions on the HDD.)
I wonder if I can use Norton Ghost 12 to make a backup copy of my Vista system (two partitions: Vista system (C) and HP Recovery Partition (D) before installing Ubuntu/Linux.
If I later (after the Ubuntu/Linux install) want to get back my Vista system (C and D partition). Can I do that by restoring from my Norton Ghost image?
The way I use Norton Ghost 12 is that I choose "make a backup copy once" ("make an independent recovery point"). (Sorry if English is wrong, the version I have seen of Norton Ghost was in Swedish). When I use this option, the program lets me choose C and D partition together (using ctr-key) and it will put two separate recovery files on my external disk.
I am no good at explaining. My question is: Will the ENTIRE disk be restored if I restore from the Norton Ghost recovery CD. (I naturally choose to restore both partitions.) I know all data, files, system, programs ... will be restored. However if bootloader and partition structure have been changed, will they also be restored?
Thanks a lot for taking your time.

I apologize for my misunderstanding earlier. The options when restoring on the Recovery Disk allow you to RESTORE MASTER BOOT RECORD, as well as set the partition type, and set the active drive. I would recommend doing a dry run of the backup and restore process before you make major changes to the disk, so you become familiar with the process and are able to perform all the tasks without a risk of data loss. I would recommend that you review Chapter 14 of the Norton Ghost 14 User Guide; it provides much information on advanced settings for backup and restore of images. Thanks!
Tony Weiss,
Thanks a lot for information and advice. Norton Ghost is, as I see it, one of the most useful and reliable programs
around. Making a total copy of your disk (including both Windows- and Linux-partitions) is really something to fall
back on.
Thanks.
