Ghost v9 versus later versions - input please

Hi, newbie here in this forum, although a looong time Norton products user.

I run 4 external USB drives; 1 for data, 1 for a Ghost backup of that data, 1 for photos and the last one for Ghost v 9.0.2.3981 backup of the photos drive.

Win XP SP2, Dell Dimension 9150, with 2 x 320 Gb RAID mirrored internal drives. C:\ contains Windows, Program Files and my websites (which are copied to the data drive, and then backed up to my Ghost data drive)

My external data drive crashed just before Xmas.  Bought a 1Tb Hitachi "EasyDrive" to replace it and proceeded to attempt a restore to this new drive. It ran for 12 hrs (approx 30Gb highly compressed backup file) without any result apart from an error message (E0BB0090 - Cannot re-size partition - despite setting the partition as a primary for the entire disk, and re-formatting it as NTFS)

After MUCH fiddling over three days, managed a complete restore to the new drive but noticed that, in the process, the drive had been re-formatted back to FAT32. Copied the recovered files across to another drive, and again re-formatted the new drive to NTFS.

Since this was SO much hassle to restore a drive, have decided to abandon Ghost and revert to doing straight copies from one drive to  another. But before I do, let me ask this:- would it be better to go for a (much) later version of Ghost? Is there a comparison chart anywhere? Has anybody else gone through this pain with v9? Has anyone mirrrored two external USB drives?
