GiveAwayOfTheDay Installer Problems

First let me say that the more I've used Norton, the better I like it. I migrated to it from Avast and McAfee and wouldn't go back for anything. I don't tend to surf dangerously, but Norton has saved me from trouble several times. Well done!

Now, as to the post: Recently the site GiveAwayOfTheDay has apparently begun using Thermida or some such thing to protect the integrity of their giveaways. This "wrapper" apparently triggers SONAR. Yesterday I tried one of GOTD's programs and couldn't install due to the conflict between SONAR and the "wrapper".

Has anyone here had similar trouble with programs from this site? How did you handle the conflict? GOTD moderators seem to delete my comments concerning the conflict rather than acknowledge them.

Regards, Kyuzo.

I was just reading a GOTD  blog about the problem. It's no big deal as I only occasionally like anything offered by them. I downloaded WinUtilities Pro in August with no problems. Yesterday I thought I'd try WiseCleaner Pro. When I activated the setup, a SONAR alert  (it was SONAR, I'm positive) came up in the lower corner of the screen and said the file was behaving suspiciously and that SONAR was deleting the setup file. I tried a couple more times to no avail. Like I said, no big loss. From what I gather from the blog, I'm not the only downloader with a problem (a couple of the posters were Norton users). I personally don't plan on using the site again- nothing against GOTD, it's just getting weird.

Apparently, this Thermida protection is also used quite frequently by malware and virus writers to hide the malicious code from antivirus programs. Therefore, I gather that some AVs (I don't know about Norton) simply regard anything wrapped in Thermida as suspicious. I just thought I'd post to see if anyone here had had similar problems. It might also help make Norton personnel aware of the problem. The going fix at GOTD is apparently to deactivate the AV during install, but I would rather not do that.

My thanks, Kyuzo.

That is a real possiblity.  As they say, "better safe than sorry."

Yes, I had this same problem yesterday with the GOTD. I disabled Norton long enough to do the install, though I don't like having to do that. It was a SONAR detection as you mentioned. I've simply passed on a few offerings by unfamiliar software vendors. I note that in a GOTD blog post from August they wrote:

"For Norton disabling Firewall only should work in most cases. We’ve also contacted Symantec and are waiting for being “white listed”."

But here it is January and...

I appreciate the replies, fellows. This was my first software opt-in since August, before they changed the wrapper (i'm using their terminology). I'm glad it wasn't just me. I decided just to pass on it. I'm surprised they published your problem- your post was one I'd seen. I posted twice regarding the problem and they eliminated both! (?) I finally had to go through the blog before i could find out anything.

At any rate, thanks again for the replies!

Warmest regards, Kyuzo.
