A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence early New Year’s Day after reportedly stealing a golf cart and five bottles of champagne from an Angels Camp residence.
About 5 a.m. Tuesday, California Highway Patrol informed the Angels Camp Police Department that John Scott Vishion, 45, of Citrus Heights, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The CHP told police Vishion was driving a golf cart he admitted to taking from a house near Greenhorn Creek Golf Resort.
A few hours later, a police officer responded to a Smith Flat Road residence to take a report for a stolen golf cart.
The victim reported that sometime after 11:40 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, an unknown person entered the garage and stole a golf cart, golf clubs and five bottles of champagne.
The officer then interviewed Vishion in Calaveras County Jail.
Vishion told the officer he left the hotel he was staying at in Angels Camp that night after getting into an argument and spotted the golf cart in the garage while walking.
He said he unplugged it from the wall charger, loaded the bottles into the cart and began driving. He intended to drive about 80 miles back to Citrus Heights but made a wrong turn onto Highway 4 and became lost after nearly 14 miles, according to police.
Felony charges of burglary, theft of a vehicle, possession of stolen property and grand theft were added to his affidavit, police said.
