Goodbye Norton

Since using Norton for more than a decade I say Goodbye Norton.
Since the recent Norton Utility update failure and the required billing information in 360 I felt that I had to defend myself a bit more. With a lot of satisfaction!

As everyone who contributed to this thread have already stated, the constant nag popups are so intrusive as to be the equivalent of spam. Even more is the “you have issues” type of message on the Home Screen that looks like it can fix a “problem”, to only follow that to discover it is a sales page for a £40 Norton service. Between this and Windows pop ups when an update has been installed… I would expect to put up with this with freeware, not a paid package. I have seen inexperienced PC users overwhelmed by this. Then there a people who are Neurodivergent. Does Norton even consider anyone who is not computer savvy? I am, and it really pisses me off. It has bombed out running programmes for me. The ability to turn on silent mode is buried away under settings and cannot just be muted for all time. I have noted that in this and other threads that no one from Norton has ever replied, even with a corporate “thanks for your input”, type of message. Here is to pissing in the wind… Oh wait! Maybe a Class Action legal challenge might work! Does anyone know of any other AV software that leaves you in peace?

I'm glad that I did not start using Norton. Reading from posts here it looks like a big headache.

You could say the same for any product after visiting their forums.  Forums exist basically to solve problems other users are having, so you get a lot of "headache" posts that do not necessarily reflect the experiences of most users.

Frank, you can't, but I suggest instead of clicking Apply Now, select Apply later instead, then restart your machine.  I have much less trouble doing that.

Ok, thanks Krusty.

I thought that the Norton Removal Tool was supposed to take care of all this complete removal business so that nothing else need be done to finish complete removal?  Would some experts explain this?

There are always some remnants left that deal with licensing. Just in case you wish to reinstall Norton at some time. This also prevents users from just deleting a trial, and reinstalling another trial, trying to avoid paying.

This update... like others, did not go well.

On two of my three computers, it got stuck.  It required hard boots.

Like with Windows... I'd like to delay software updates.  How do I do that?

Browns Fan 4 Ever:

After more years than I can remember, I've dumped Norton.  I still have 118 days left on my subscription and was going to wait but Norton is just not effective or user friendly any longer.  I no longer have any faith or trust in this product.  I've downloaded and installed McAfee and initially I'm very impressed with their product.  Goodbye Norton.  You've jumped the shark.

laugh Norton is the best AV! I've been using for almost 6 years. It's the best.

So did I. I can only say that I ran the removal tool instead of uninstalling Norton then running the tool which some have said was the reason Revo found things but imo running Norton Uninstaller & then the removal tool shouldn’t be needed & the removal tool should be enough to clean out Norton completely. If this isn’t the case the removal is mis-named & it should be cleanup tool.

Twilight Princess, you say that    ------- I ran the removal tool & then ran Revo Uninstaller & searched for Norton/Symantec remnants & it found quite a number. -------------------

Same for me, my subscription doesn’t run out ‘til December but with all the problems I’ve had with updates corrupting the program then having to await the fix or error messages on opening saying the program needs to repair itself I gave up & began using Windows Defender (along with MB which I already had), I noticed my PC immediately became much faster.
I still use Norton’s ID safe.

If you haven't already, it might pay you to run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool in Advanced Mode to ensure there is no conflict with your new choice of AV.

Good luck!
