google hijackers - is this the same as selecting a link and ending up on a porn site or an adv ?

I'm old, I don't speak computer - is "google hijackers" the same question as:  when I select a site from a google search I end up on a site selling something unconnected to my choice (or a porn site) ?  Will malware help solve this ?  thanks
