Google Play "Pre-Scan"

My Norton Mobile Security can no longer "pre-scan" apps from the Google Play Store since a couple days ago.  Not sure if there was something updated on the Google Play Store's side making this function not functional.  Does anyone else have similar problem?

Further to my earlier post here is an easier way to go about my solution.
First go to settings and go to battery (on galaxy s7 don’t know how this would work on other devices) then click on power saving, there you will see 2 option click off the restrict ALL background data which should be the bottom option, this will on galaxy s7 let Google play do the pre scan WITHOUT having to turn power saving off completely. **** please note i don’t know if this will work on other devices but look under power saving mode if you have this setting ******

I have just posted a possible and complete solution for this problem please look my name up if you’ve not already been notified of my solution

I have found a complete solution for galaxy s7 users and maybe all other devices.
Go to power saving on the pull down by clicking on power saving writing there you will see 2 options the one you need to turn off is restrict all background data. This solved the problem for me so now i dont need to temporarily turn piwer saving off.

Thanks for the info peterweb, appreciated.

dognponyshow, that's strange; that it works on one device and not the other? Something else I noticed, if I plug the charger into my phone, the pre-scan works. The instant you run purely on battery power, the scan won't work - unless of course you turn off power saving as mentioned earlier in the thread.

It didn't last long!  Today I had to disable power saver on my tablet for app scan to work.  It was fine yesterday and still works fine on my phone???  Tablet and phone have same OS and same Norton Security Premium - one works and one doesn't???

I wonder Norton, are you going to release a patch then for the rest of us on 360 Multi-device and others etc...?

The only connection to 360 Multi Device or the newer Norton Security is for the product key. You are installing Norton Mobile Security on the mobile devices and all product updates are totally separate to the PC based products.

dognponyshow, interesting, I'm using Norton 360 Multi-device and have the problem on my mobile where you get the network error "network unavailable". It seems Norton has resolved this issue with "Norton Security Premium" then....

I updated my Norton service to Norton Security Premium on all my devices and they all work just fine (laptop, Galaxy S5 cell and Galaxy S2 tablet.)  The Norton app scan is working fine on all three.  No connection problem.

Ladies and gents my apologies, you are right, tried this on an S6 Edge+, does not work.

I was unable to edit the post, I think you have got about 60 minutes after posting to make any changes.

Bill, agree with you, as long as users keep finding work-arounds, the corporates will probably not bother to fix

Unfortunately Mark once again you can't go by the Android version.  Your above suggestion doesn't exist on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+.  I just stick with the pain in the butt, disable the enable power saving.  Problem is, as long as we keep finding a way around the problem neither Google, Norton, Samsung or anyone else is going to fix it.

Bill

Unfortunately your suggestion doesn't work on Samsung Galaxy S5 or S7 however I don't know about other devices so maybe you could edit your solution to incorporate my findings.

Hey guys n gals, try this:

For Android 6 (Marshmallow)

  1. Settings
  2. go down to "Battery"
  3. Select "Battery"
  4. Scroll down to "APP Power Saving"
  5. Click / select "Details"
  6. Scroll down until you find "Norton Mobile Security"
  7. Select / click on "Norton Mobile Security"
  8. A small window will pop-up, gives you three options
    • Auto save power
    • Always save power and finally
    • Disabled.
  9. Select "Disabled"

Problem solved. Norton will now work as it always used to. By default, it seems Android 6 / Marshmallow enable power saving on all  / most apps, but when this happens with Norton, it disables Norton's scanning in Google Play unless you disable Power Saving. This way, you don't need to disable power saving, only for the particular app; in this case Norton Mobile Security.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Mark

As i have previously mentioned on the forum that if you turn off power saving mode when looking at apps on google play then pre scan will now be working. This is the only way for the time being that works.

Does anyone have any new Info on this issue. I am new with forums and hope this is the correct way to post. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet. I tried the solutions offered and nothing worked. I still get network unavailable. My Galaxy S5 phone still works same way it always did when scanning a new app. Both devices have been upgraded to 6.0.1

So my question now as mentioned in my last post - "The question is now, is Norton actually doing what it's supposed to be doing when the device is in Power saving mode" ???

What I will say about this is that there have been known issues with Samsung devices and the Google Play App Advisor feature. These issues are caused by proprietary changes made by Samsung to the version of Android OS on their devices. These issues with the App Advisor do not affect the rest of the security features of NMS.

Peterweb, you're right, so thanks to metal-mickie-2013, for this work-around. Much appreciated.

Bill thanks for pointing out as you mentioned. On Android 6.01 the cache clear option is indeed found as you mention - Android (Samsung, Galaxy S6 Edge+) the cache for the apps is located: Settings, Apps, Application Manager, (open the specific app) and cache is under Storage. -

Thanks for that. Well I cleared the cache, but Norton Mobile still won't "pre-scan" any apps on google play. You have to "put off the power saving option" on the mobile device then Norton works as it should.

So my question now as mentioned in my last post - "The question is now, is Norton actually doing what it's supposed to be doing when the device is in Power saving mode" ???

this is a sort of work-around if you will that Peterweb has provided

Thanks for trying to give me the credit, but it was metal-mickie-2013 that posted the workaround.

As for app cache location, Bill seems to have it correct for Samsung devices. My HTC on Android 4.4.2 and an LG on 5.1.1 both show as I posted above.

Peterweb: Wasn't able to locate the cache with the scroll down.  For some reason on my Android (Samsung, Galaxy S6 Edge+) the cache for the apps is located: Settings, Apps, Application Manager, (open the specific app) and cache is under Storage. I thought these things were more or less uniform, must be less!

Mark Ventner: Give this a try on yours, maybe that where they will be.

Bill, agree, this is a sort of work-around if you will that Peterweb has provided. For which I'm thankful for. However, I think it pretty clear this has something to do with Android 6 and up. So Norton need to find a fix for this as we can't keep turning on and off the power saving feature whenever browsing google play store.

The question is now, is Norton actually doing what it's supposed to be doing when the device is in Power saving mode ????

Peterweb, I also found a clear cache option, but this was to clear the entire cache  which would affect all the apps / accounts. Unless I'm still missing something on Android 6.01.... Are you also running on Android 6?
