Is google redirect a virus and if so why does Norton not pick it up during scans? Any advice on how to rid myself of the hassle would be greatly appreciated.

I usually recommend a visit to one of the free malware removal forums for assistance.  Removing rootkits can occasionally cause the machine to become unbootable.  It is best to identify the rootkit/bootkit before removal attempts are made.

I am having my Google searches redirected. One of the programs is "theclickcheck.com". How do I get rid of this? My system scans are all up to date.

I tend to agree with that, as I've read the same thing from some of the links you provided, while following some  threads there. They have a very deliberate step by step process they use.

Thanks for the help I visisted the site and followed link to kapersky and downloaded the software it didnt find anything. Im not sure what is going on when I google things I am redirected so I thought it was probabaly a redirect virus. Is there any thing else I can check?

   What browser are you using?

   Did you tried with other Browsers?

Ok.  You might download a coy of Free Version Of Malwarebytes' Anti Malware from  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free.  Be sure to decline the trial of the Pro Version as it will clash with Norton.  Update and run a full scan.  This could take some time,  so be patient.  Post back with your results.

I am usin internet explorer I have not tried other version. I have researched this to the best of my ability and have tried malware bits in the past to no avail.

Clear the Windows Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and prefetch folder. Download and run the Norton Power Eraser:

Let us know if it detects or removes any threats.

This sounds like a virus I had not that long ago and the only way to get rid of it is to format the ard drive and re-install Windows.

The only way to get rid of a infection (virus) is to reformat is completely false that includes TDSS family, Rustock, Zeroaccess, MaxSS, Virut or Ramnit and other Rootkits, Bootkits, Worms and Viruses.   

 

Actually some infections survive a reformat and as soon as the user installs and updates Norton finds the Infection reappears.

 

Yes, on the web sometimes forums or blogs state that the only way to remove XXX is to reformat the hard drive but I often wonder if the person giving the advice has actually run the Malware to test what it does and figure out how to remove it and if that person is good enough technically to work out how to break the running infection and then then clean. Even if a required patched file or Boot Sector.

 

True there are Malware that cause redirects  TDSS is one family that does this.

Reformatting is the correct way to fix it and the infection will not reappear.

Depends on what infection family was causing or is causing the redirect, which family was detected and causing your redirect??

 

There are families of malware that survive refomats and people have have found that out,  "I have reformatted my HD and reinstalled Norton and it's still there"

 

That is why people like myself and others on malware boards infect our systems to learn how to remove the infection (sometimes more than one at a time) without damaging the OS and personal files. Sometimes with the help of company's like Symantec for virus (Virut, Ramnit etc.)

 

People can see how in the past I have removed all sorts of stubborn malware on this forum even before stand alone tools are created and so I have to script, Or I couldn't work it all out so I a handful of times I have grabbed the file(s) from the users PC infected my PC worked out a way then did it step by step for the user.  Ramnit being one.
