Gost 15 Remote Procedure Call Failed

What does this mean and how do I fix it?  No error number is shown, but I get this error about 10 minutes into a files & folders backup.

Running Windows Vista, Ghost 15, and have Norton 360 installed.

Ghost 15 has run fine for a long time without problems, so why this error now?

Hi John701,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Is your Vista 32 or 64 bit? What is your exact version of Ghost from Help > About?

You said there is no error number but is there any other information presented other than remote procedure call failed?

Does it work OK when you do an image backup (Backup my Computer)?

What file system is on your target drive? FAT or NTFS, etc.

Also, please bring up the Windows Application events. You can see the Windows event viewer by typing event in the Start menu search box and hitting return. Then browse to your application events. Check for events around the time that you get the error from Ghost.

Please indicate any applicable events and if you are not 100% sure they are related, please mention them. Only events that immediately surround the time of the reported error from Ghost are important.

Thanks

Allen

Vista 32 bit

Ghost 15 version: 15.0.0.35659

No other informaiton is presented, all it says is "Remote Procedure Call Failed"

Full back up appears to work fine, I am running 1 now with 3 hours to go on it.

File System: NTFS

My system is busy doing a full backup but will post the other information shortly.

Found an error numb on the screen that had not been the previously  - Error 800706be running job :Weekly File Backup.  Elapsed tie: 00:25:16.

Here is the event log information I found:

Hi John,

Thanks for the updates. What type of backup drive do you have? Is it a network drive or local to your computer?

I presume your last image backup completed OK?

I found a couple of similar problems with RPC failures reported on the forum but just enough different that I don't think they apply to you.

Just to make sure is your image backup being saved to the same hard drive as your file and folder backup?

Thanks

Allen

I back up for a local USB 1.5TB drive

Last image completed ok.

full drive image, and file & folder backup to the same drive.

Hi John,

Thanks for the update. So we've eliminated the network aspect of RPC's then so this should be local RPC.

Curious that image backups work for you and not file and folder backups. I think it is perhaps an issue with the file and folder catalog database, though I have never seen this error reported due to a problem with the database. Nevertheless it is pretty easy to confirm if this is the cause or not.

The steps below will force Ghost to rebuild the file and folder catalog database. After you do this procedure see if the problem still occurs.

Access start menu and type in the word services in the Search box (Windows Vista/Windows 7) or services.msc from the start menu/run box (Windows XP). When the services window comes up please search for the entry for Norton Ghost. Highlight this entry and Stop the service; this option will be located near the top left of the screen.

Then go into Windows Explorer to the following path:
C:\ProgramData\Symantec\FileBackup (Windows Vista) or

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\FileBackup (Windows XP)

Rename (do NOT delete) the catalog.dat file to something else.

From the Service window, click Start to start the Norton Ghost service again.

Bring up Norton Ghost and select Recover My Files from the Tasks tab.

Then from the File menu select Import Backup Destination. Browse to the parent directory where your File and Folder backups are located. Ghost will now import from scratch all the files and folders you have not removed. This will rebuild the catalog.dat file you previously renamed.

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Allen

I did all that.  I took 4 hours to rebuild, and 32 hours to perform the next File & Folders backup!

Now Ghost shows I have 516.6 GB of "Other Used Space" on the drive.  There is NOTHING else but backups on this drive.  How do I solve that and get back the extra space.

This program has problems like this every 6 months or so forcing me to uninstall and reinstall it.  I am beginging to think I wasted my money on this!
