I have this same problem. My laptop has the green check mark, but the desktop has had the grey circle for the past few weeks. Any ideas on why it's doing this?

Hi Catamarack,
Welcome to the Norton Community. Can you tell us which Norton product you have? Is it NIS and what is the version from Support > About? Also what version of WIndows do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?
It can take a bit for NIS to fully load up and initialize at startup so it is normal for this to happen immediately after the desktop first appears. Does the icon then change to include a green checkmark shortly thereafter? If so, then it is nothing to worry about.
You can also configure NIS to load a bit earlier in the Windows startup process by going to Computer Settings and changing "Enable Boot Time Protection" to Aggressive. This might cause the computer to start up somewhat slower but many users report the difference is negligible.
The green checkmark should appear sooner when configured this way.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

This is on a win7 64 bit OS. The version is NIS 18.1.0.37 and it has been installed for months. It used to have the green check mark but I noticed a few weeks ago that it had the grey circle instead in the system tray. When I open the program it says it's secure and it runs its checks regularly. This is also running on a vista 64 bit and on that machine the green check shows correctly.
Hi Catamarack,
Can you post a screen shot of your main NIS window? You can do this by bringing up NIS and then with the window active, do an Alt + Print Screen combination from your keyboard. Then bring up Microsoft Paint program and hit Ctrl + V. Then save to your desktop as a JPG image.
To attach to your post please click on the symbol at the top of the reply editor. You can then browse to the image you saved and click Insert.
Best wishes.

Here is the requested screenshot. As you can see, the system status is showing as secure but the icon in the system tray is still the grey circle.
I apologize for wasting your time. A restart appears to be all that was needed. This machine doesn't get that often.

Hi Catamarack,
Not a waste of time. The main thing is that you have it working now.
Be cognizant of any live updates performed automatically by NIS or done manually by you. Normally NIS will recommend a restart when it is necessary but sometimes a restart is needed even when you don't get notified by NIS.
With any problems like this it is a good idea to restart and then go from there if the problem is still there.
Best wishes.

I've been experiencing the same problem with a strange twist: 2 NIS 2011 System tray icons - one gray with white slash and one with the green with white check mark - at the same time!

If you are using Win7, please go to the Notification Area Customize and see if both NIS icons are listed for the same thing; like two Symantec Service Frameworks or ccSvcHst.

Hi KoloheWiz,
What happens if you click on each of these NIS icons in turn? Do both bring up the main NIS user interface? If so do they both look the same? Does NIS report that it is secure? Also, if both bring up the user interface check Support > About and make sure that both report the same version number.
Have you restarted your computer and the problem is still there?
I saw a similar description in the post below:
I think you may have something set to ignore. From your main NIS user interface do you have any gray circles next to any of the items as depicted below?
Double check each item in the main screen by hovering your mouse over the words. If nothing is set to ignore then you should see an "Ignore" option. If you instead see a "Monitor" option on any item, it means that it is currently set to Ignore. In this case click on Monitor.
After checking each item, close the user interface and see if you still see the / in the icon.
Please let us know how it goes.
Best wishes.
