For the past two weeks my norton has a gray icon on its icon that sits in the tray below. I am not getting a warning everytime my pc starts up that my firewall is shut off. When I click on norton, it says that everything is secure and there are no issues. Not sure how to resolve this issue?
mercerx13 - Welcome to the Community and would you give us a little more information about your system? What Norton product and version number are you using? What Operating System is your PC using, and any Service Packs? Is Norton the only full time security software you are running?
The norton product I am using is Norton Internet Security, Version: 18.6.0.29, I am running windows Vista, service pack 2. Norton is the only product thats used to handle everything for my computers safety. If you need any more info let me know, I would like to get this fixed.
I responded to what you asked me, do you have any ideas how I can fix the problem???
HI mercerx13,
Welcome to the Norton Community.
From your main NIS (Norton Internet Security) window do you have something which looks like the image below?
If not, please post a screen shot of what you are seeing by following the procedures in the link below.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

Hello mercerx13
I think we need a little more information or description of what you are seeing. Are you seeing the Norton Icon in the systray as grey in color instead of green? The grey color would indicate that Norton is not operating completely or not loaded up completely. Are you saying if you check in the control panel under security center, it shows that your fire wall is off, but Norton says everything is ok?
Try restarting the PC... sometimes the problem usually goes away after a restart. Note: immediately after the PC loads, the icon would initially be gray and later turn green. If it doesn't either a. restart or b. turn on silent mode and turn it off again. This changes the icon and forces it to update
Now all of a sudden the green check mark is back near norton and there is no odd symbols on the main screen, it shows all is ok. it shows a red shiled from windows saying my firewall is off and to turn theres on. Odd, never had this problem before but not sure how to show windows that norton is protecting me and to leave me alone.
HI mercerx13,
Can you please post a screenshot of what you are seeing from the Windows Action Center?
Again, you can post a screenshot by following the procedures here.
Best wishes.
Allen
Hi mercerx13,
I'm not sure that this is relevant, but when you click on the red shield icon in your system tray, then you should notice two things if everything is right with the firewall,
First, at the top, in the Firewall area, it should indicate that a firewall is ON, and if you click on the down arrows up there, then it should tell you that "Norton Internet Security is currently ON"
Second, at the bottom of this display, where it says" Manage security settings for Windows Firewall", if you click on that link then it should indicate that "Windows firewall is OFF..."
This is the way is should be if your system is configured correctly -- i.e., you should have one and only one firewall active, and it is the Norton Internet Security firewall that should be active. The Windows Firewall must be OFF while the Norton Internet Security firewall is ON. This is because they will interfere with eath other if they are both running at the same time,
