Has my laptop been hijacked?

I'm on my ancient desktop which is very slow, but at least I can get into it.

I do hope someone can advise as what to do. When I was on my laptop last night I noticed what looked like a phishing email in one of my accounts, so went to change my password, and there in small  but admittedly red, letters, was an apology from my isp for any phishing emails received due to their database having been compromised.  Shortly after that, my email account went into 'not responding' (nothing unusual, I'm afraid) so logged off and on again. I lock my compurer with a password, and when I entered it, I got this:

'The user profile service failed to logon. User profile cannot be loaded'

I have tried several times, but I am unable to open my files.  I went into F2  and found this under Security:

 User password is locked

 HDD password is clear

Supervisor password clear

Set user password locked (greyed out)

Set HDD password - enter

password on boot disabled (greyed out)

Computrace disabled

Failsafe Status - deactivated

I have re entered new passwords where it allows but still cannot open up my files.

Help please!

PS will my bank details be at risk?

Please supply the additional information Nikhil suggested.

Have you tried shutting down and restarting your computer?

<< there in small  but admittedly red, letters, was an apology from my isp for any phishing emails received due to their database having been compromised.   >>  is a fairly typical scam message from what I hear -- have you asked your ISP whether they sent the message?

You might have a look at this MSKB article and see if anything there helps:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215

Hai again,

Visit the link huwyngr gave. Its surely of good help.

When you pressed F2, you entered BIOS setup.
Under the security section there what you saw (and posted above) is the default settings.
Untill you set your supervisor password (which will be asked ,if set, while you enter BIOS for editing), user password (usually asked, if set, at bootup, has lot of restrictions in editing BIOS settings)will be deactivated (greyed out).
Note that you can also use either supervisor pwd or user pwd for entering BIOS or continuing booting, but only with a supervisor pwd you can edit BIOS.

Computrace is a feature with mostly Dell and HP laptops (AFAIK). It can be enabled only once, and is used to trace back the laptop when its lost or stolen.
Visit:

.
Please donot edit it unless you are familiar with it (i mean passwords and computrace).
What do you mean by ‘unable to open my files’?
Is it that you could successfully login to your own a/c (not temp a/c), but could not access your library/My Documents?

The lock on the laptop, is it from the laptop's BIOS, or is it a Windows user password?

If it is a Windows password, have you tried logging into another user account on that laptop? Or have you tried booting into Safe mode to see if you can get to the files you need? If you can get into Safe mode, you might want to copy your files to a new folder that is not connected to the original locked user account. Then you can create a new user account and start over.

Hi

I have Norton 360 and I have Malwarebytes installed which I run manually before logging off.  When I switch on the laptop, windows loads then I am asked for a password (I set this up) that will let me access my files and log into any of my email accounts.  It is this set up that is now not working so I cannot get any further - I cannot access anything, at the moment, my laptop is completely useless.

I rang my bank and they assure me that my bank accounts are safe.

Hi,

Do you have the operating system installation CD / DVD? If so will it allow you to run startup repair or boot into safe mode?

Thanks

Hi Hugh

Yes I have shut down and reopened, even pulled out the battery section and pushed back in - this works when the laptop just stops for no apparent reason.  But the problem seems to lie with the password function that prevents anyone one from physically accessing anything on my computer.  I have the same thing on this desk top and I was terrified that I would not be able to use this one.  This desktop (windows XP) is so different from my laptop and so-oo sloooooow :-(

Incidently,  I ran Norton  (backup needed updating) it completed 100% even though it continued running, but everything showed yellow so all updated.  Yet when I logged on just now, back up is showing as being disabled!  I am getting paranoid now - I am beginning to feel as though someone is playing unpleasant games with me. :-(

Can you remind me how to access back up and re enable it please?

Hi cv

I cannot get into my computer at all.  I set up a password to lock out any unauthorised access, and this function is not working, I can only get  into safemode, and that doesn't take me anywhere. :-(

Hi Dick No dvd, I’m afraid, everything came already installed. I have all the original software and installation discs you could possible want for this ancient desktop! (thanks for reminding me about that!)

So do you have the operating system CD? and can you get it started using that?

Keep us posted

When trying to log in, be sure you do not have the Caps Lock on.

Freddies --

You've been asked twice what is the version of Windows on the laptop you are locked out of?

Have you asked your ISP if they did send the email? If they did not then I'd guess malware infection ..... let's hope not ransomware.

Might help if you told us the make and exact model ID so we can look up details on its website. We don't even know if it has an optical drive since there are downloadable tools that might help.

I had a look at that article Huw but I could not find a resolution there.  I cannot see a way of getting into my computer through safe mode.  I have to put in my password to unlock my computer as the Windows logo uploads, there is no access to 'start' even using the start button on the keyboard.  But interesting to learn that this is a known problem, so really there should be a solution somewhere. :smileyfrustrated:

Sorry Huw, I was frantic yesterday thinking my laptop had been hijacked, I missed that request,  My laptop is a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7.

After a thorough search, I'm happy to say that I found 2 Dell discs 'Drivers & Utilities' and 'Operating System' and various leaflets that I must sit down and read through.

Good news -- check out the Dell website too. I've used it for some machines and it is fairly helpful with support including downloadable pdf manuals that are much more comprehensive than anything you are likely to get on paper.

The best case is to use a windows 7 disc(the version you are having like ultimate or home basic etc, borrow an original disc from so mebody you trust) and perform a repair windows.
The worst case is:
.
Since your windows installation is original and OEM installed, I assume Dell has a backup for you which will restore system to factory setting (All programs you installed as well as updates will be lost after that restore.)
If you havent formatted your laptop hard drive with windows installation disc, it will be there.
To access it, normally start windows -> there will be an option to shutdown windows on the rhs below corner where you login.
There press ‘Shift’ or ‘Ctrl’ or ‘Alt’ key and click restart.
(I had done this for a win 8, so please refer Dell forums or CS for exact option)
that will take you to restore options.
If your laptop is below 1 year old, the phone support from Microsoft and Dell is of good use.
Hope this helps again.

You are right there Huw, I have been reading throught the setup guide and it continually refers to getting support online.  I am running the boot tests on the laptop at the moment, will take aout 30mins, but all seems to be well so far.  I'm trying to work out if this is a DEll problem or a Microsoft Windows problem.  Any idea how this problem of 'user profile cannot be loaded' occurs?  I'd just like to understand what has happened here.

Thanks for all replies from everyone so far.

Have a look at this MSKB   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215

In view of one of the "for example" interferences try disabling your Norton by right mouse clicking on the system tray icon and selecting Disable Antivirus Autopotect -- select permanent (but don't forget to re-enable afterwards) and rebooting the computer. I would actually shut down for about 20 seconds and then restart instead of using Restart on the Shut Down selection. (Make sure your Power Options are set to Shut down and not Hibernate or Sleep).

But that MSKB does have a FixIt button for method 3.

Note I haven't had a chance yet to re-read the whole thread and see what you have done and what can't be done like trying a different user account.

Can you give me the exact Dell model identification (not the serial number) so I can look it up on their website -- would look like Inspiron M731R or Inspiron 15 Non-Touch .....

Does this include Norton or my ISP?  Never had to do a restore, so will check ou the DEll site and clue myself up.
