Has Norton any plans to alert customers to updates? Should they?

I've started/contributed to many threads in which I've found that my problem was caused by my not having the latest version of NIS.

And only now have I learnt the difference between New Version Check (which checks the product) and Live Update (which checks the version of that product) - http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Live-Update-does-not-auto-check-for-updates/m-p/1156238#M261602

Could someone please tell me if versions are ever updated to patch a security vulnerability?

If they aren't then I'll go quietly.

*** If they are,  isn't it reasonable to ask why we aren't alerted by Norton to new version updates? After all, these are paid products and even most free products send you update alerts. Leaving it to customers to use Live Update regularly isn';t enough.

I use Secunia PSI to check my software and I will probably look at Heimdal(https://heimdalsecurity.com/en/products) as recommended by one of Secunia forum's gurus.

Or am I completely wrong i.e. version updates are never done to close a security hole?

EDIT - to change paragraph***.
