Has Symantec really "thrown in the towel"?

Last month, the media carried reports of Symantec's announcement that "traditional antivirus is dead and ineffective" - I took this to mean that my NIS would be changed to meet this problem head-on.

But I've just read an astonishing article - included in it are two comments which I quote in full:

"It was sad indeed when Symantec announced last month that they were essentially throwing in the towel."

"The reason that the mighty Symantec is throwing in the towel is their inability to stop polymorphic viruses which is a common technique of all modern viruses. PC Matic protects your computer and XP computers against all of these threats."

Now I would normally never give publicity on a forum to a competitior of that forum but I sincerely hope that the Moderator/Mr Weiss will allow me to in this case as it's a very important issue to the likes of me, home users who are PC-competent but always wary, and so reliant on the likes of NIS.

The article in question [The State of Security – Part 3 by Rob Cheng] is in PCPitstop's June 2014 Newsletter -

I appreciate that a competitor will put its own slant on articles that promote its own products but is the article right?

Will Symantec be responding in kind? It should, in my view, to maintain customers' 100% confidence in the product.
