Has this ever happened to you? PLEASE READ and tell me if a Norton tech was trying to SCAM me? I contacted the tech directly through the Norton website

A Norton error page opened over top of my Norton security page where I scan, update etc. The error page said my subscription needed renewing. The error page prevented me from accessing the Norton security page. I opened Norton’s website and went to my account. I have auto renewal, and the account said my subscription was current. After searching the Norton website, I found a customer service number. I told the recording I wanted an agent. That agent took control of my computer and fixed my issue. I watched what he did. HERE IS THE PART I’M QUESTIONING:
After helping me, the tech offers me a 2026 renewal discount price of $49.99. I pay $127 auto renewal using my PayPal account as payment. My PayPal account is stored in the my Norton account. My next payment is due Jan. 2026. I tell the tech I will take the discount, but then he says he needs my CREDIT CARD as payment. He says he cannot charge the discount renewal price to my PayPal account which I have stored on my account. I tell him I don’t want to give him my credit card information. He then tells me to use my phone’s keypad to enter my card info. I say no, because I would still be giving out my credit card info. He tells me the ONLY way I can pay for the discounted renewal price is with my credit card. At that point, I say forget the discount. I am not giving out my credit card info. WAS THIS A SCAM? It sure felt like a scam. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THEM?

somewhat conflicted in my thinking here
if you were on the norton website and got chat support was that for another issue or the renewal issue?
you stated jan. 2026 is the next payment for subscription so seems too early to me for any email or notice about it , it seems to be about 3 months prior when those start.
the questionable part not sure if you actually got a real norton rep or not is the offer given and the hard sell i.e demand for credit card
not saying they wont offer any promotion or deal but seems heavy tactic style and not something i would expect.
if your certain it was the real support ( site used) and not a other site pretending to be norton? that does happen it seems ( calls also)
best advice stay cautious

Since your Norton account showed your subscription is active and not due for renewal until months down the road, red flags would have told me stop dead in my tracks. And without a screenshot to validate its hard to determine whether this was indeed a browser popup scam or at the very least, improper conduct from a support agent or even confusion as things progressed. Those hard sell-ups are always the dead give away things aren’t on the straight and narrow on my part. Do you have a message where the context of the chat session was sent or did you save one? That would help. Nevertheless I am escalating to an Norton Admin to see if they can get some answers.

@Gayathri_R Please escalate for possible support scam issue.

The error page that popped up, saying I needed to renew my subscription, was preventing me from accessing my Norton program. So, although my subscription was current, I was unable to use the Norton 360 program. I went to the Norton website to get help on how to remove the error page. I called customer service, from the Norton website, and eventually got a Norton tech. The Norton tech asked me if I would allow him to take over my computer via a download called “help(dot)norton(dot)com.” I allowed him access and watched what he did. It was AFTER he finished helping me that he tried to sell me the discounted renewal, telling me he could only accept my credit card as payment. My PayPal account is stored with Norton as the form of payment for my subscription renewal. I thought it odd that he could not charge my PayPal account which was already stored on Norton’s website.

Norton will have to review your support ticket for answers regarding whether this was legit or you being taken advantage of. No one here on the forums has access to your account and its information to assist with this type of issue. I tagged an admin in my post for them to review this thread and escalate. Please look for a possible message in the forums message center from Norton.
