Although I can 'sometimes' succesfully host or play a game I seemed to be blocked from either most of the time. My guess is that Norton Firewall is blocking access though I have AOE3 set as allow under the Program Control settings. My friend using Windows Firewall sometimes opens his ports and has no trouble but I can't find the equivalent in Norton. Is there a way to get it Norton to allow me to play these multiplayer game? I run Norton Internet Security 2012.
Hello rbwilson
Welcome to the Norton Forum
First of all, have you port forwarded or port triggered the necessary ports in your router? Is your game fully patched? The AOE games are difficult to set up servers from what I have heard. Are you trying to play thru the game itself or thru another gaming site?
Is your game fully patched? The Game is Up to Date
Are you trying to play thru the game itself or thru another gaming site? Through the game itself - its on an ESO Server
First of all, have you port forwarded or port triggered the necessary ports in your router? Not sure how to do this - windows firewall says everything is being managed by Norton. Is there a way to do this from the Norton control panel?
Thanks, Rob
I see a section where you check programs to allow to communicate through the firewall. AOE was checked for Private/Home to allow though public wasn't checked. I am not sure if it makes a difference but I checked public too.
I was reading your comments, got an idea and may have found a solution. I restarted my modem and router and was able to play. I don't think it was a coincidence but will no more after a couple of tries.
Thanks again, Rob
Hello rbwilson
If you need help in portforwarding or port triggering and/or ports needed for your game, you may want to check out this site.
Please do let us know how you are making out after you have done that. Thanks.
Its very frustrating. There is almost a 'random' component involved where sometimes it works and then it is blocked. Restarting the modem/router doesn't seem to work anymore.
Is there a way to open the ports with Norton? I have been researching to see if I can temporarily turn off the smart firewall (I can) and then turn on the Windows 7 firewall which I am pretty confident can be configured to work (my friend did it in XP) but am seeing threads that Windows 7 might not let its firewall be used if it detects that a 3rd party is installed.
Thanks, Rob
