Held captive on an internet company sponsored link

I searched this forum and can't find any where else to post the following experience:  I was on a large retailer's web site checking out the reviews for a convection toaster oven we want to buy.  At the center of this page I noticed some sponsored links.  I clicked on one of them that advertised great prices and the following happened.

First a large yellow screen came up with text that said that in order to receive their great price I had to give them my email address.  That was a red flag to me, so I tried to close my Google tab for their website.  It made a "NO you can't do that" sound.  Next a pop up came up that said I had to click on getting their price first before I could close.  I got ticked off and tried to close the tab again but then the pop up started pulsing, saying I had to get their price first.

I tried to close the session by clicking the large red "X" at the top right of my Firefox browser.  It wouldn't close, just more pop up pulsing and the reminder I had to get my price before I could exit.  I then clicked the browser's "File" at the top left in order to exit.  It wouldn't respond.  Tried my Google tab for the website.  Nothing.  My computer was locked to their website and wouldn't respond to anything I tried.  After about a minute and a half of constantly trying to close my browser it finally closed and I shut down the session.  I then ran a Norton scan and it came up clean.

My pc has been running well and still is after the above occurrence.  I keep MS updates automatically current and of course NIS.  I've never had an experience like this before.  Right now this web site has a clean review but certainly doesn't deserve it.  Where can I report this to make sure this site gets an honest review?  Norton and my internet provider Google are the first places I can think of to report the hasty web site.  I did contact the internet retailer and they're checking into it.  Any where else?  I'm a paranoic when it comes to security, but this can't be normal behavior for any website.

Hi VaSummer,

The site is probably legitimate but was compromised by hackers who were able to insert JavaScript code that launched the popup.  Informing the site owner so that they can clean up the intrusion is about all you can do.  If this happens to you in the future the best thing to do is to click ctrl+alt+delete and end the browser process in Task Manager.
