HELP--Can't log into Identity Safe after clicking on Norton Internet Security Update on Computer

HI Folks,

I am doing some testing right now.

Please ignore the ID Safe "setup line". When I created the JPG I mistakenly had my USB flash drive connected which causes that choice to appear. This line should not be there unless you have removable media inserted.

More to follow at completion of my testing.

Best wishes.

Allen

Tried logging in with no password but it didn't work.  For what it is worth I have 2 profiles that are "portable" (main one on flash drive and 2nd less important one on an external drive).

Hi Folks,

I AM able to reproduce this problem and am alerting Symantec staff to the issue.

For those who are experiencing this problem I think I have found a way to get the ID safe data recovered so you can log in. At least this process worked for me. Please read on and be very careful to follow the steps as outlined below without deviation.

  • Go into NIS Misc. Settings and turn OFF Norton Tamper product Protection and hit Apply. Set duration to 15 minutes or 1 hour.
  • Navigate to the directory where IDDStore.dat and IDDStore_bak.dat are located. Highlight both of these files and hit Ctrl + C on your keyboard. Now right click on your desktop and select "Paste". Make sure that both files have been placed on your desktop before you go to the next step.
  • Delete both of these files from the IdentitySafeDataStore directory. If the system will not let you do this you will need to perform this in SAFE mode.
  • Now take the IDDStore_bak.dat on your desktop and right click on it and select "Copy". Then paste that back into the IdentitySafeDataStore directory.
  • Rename the IDDStore_bak.dat to IDDStore.dat.
  • Turn Norton Tamper Protection back ON in Misc. Settings. Exit NIS settings.
  • Go back into Web Settings in NIS and attempt to log into ID safe again.

Please let me know how it goes. If you still have trouble finding these files after reading through the instructions in previous posts, please let me know.

Best wishes.

Hi kikididi,

I am very sorry to hear that. Did you follow the steps precisely? Did you receive any errors when attempting to remove the files from the IdentitySafeDataStore directory?

Did you completely exit NIS settings before you went back in and tried to log into ID safe? I found when I did this that if I did not exit Settings first it would not work but once I exited settings and came back in it did work.

If this still does not work, try rebooting the computer and see if it changes anything.

If still no good you might want to try the steps again just to make sure. If you perform the steps again, skip the part where you copy the original files from IdentitySafeDataStore to your desktop since you have already done this.

It is VERY important to remove both files from the IdentitySafeDataStore directory and to copy only the IDDStore_bak.dat back into that directory and rename it to IDDStore.dat. The IDDStore.dat is the one actually used by NIS and the other file is the backup. It is the IDDStore.dat file which has the problem so by renaming the backup file to IDDStore.dat it was able to recover my ID Safe.

Obviously I cannot say that this will be a global solution but I've gone through it twice and it worked both times for me. I am also able to put the original IDDStore.dat back in place and the problem comes back. Once again renaming the backup file and it works again.

Let's see what happens when a few others try this.

Best wishes.

Found the files and here are the sizes of mine.

IDDstore.dat and IDDstore_bak.dat are both 4.27

NOW WHAT?

Hi kikididi,

I take it this means 4.27KB. Is this correct? This seems awfully small. Do you have only a few logins or a lot of logins stored?

When you tried to log into ID safe before, after two failed attempts it asks if you want to restore ID safe or initialize ID safe. Do you recall if you clicked on either of those options?

Thanks

Allen

I am certain that I followed your instructions precisely (printed out and went step by step).  Unfortunately I still get the invalid password message.  BTW my 2 dat files are 637 kb.

Hi Allen,

No it 4.27 MB not kb

I tried the process over and still doesnt work. Yes I renamed the file, I rebooted and I even kicked the **bleep** thing but still no luck :O)

Yes the first time around I did try the option to restore but not the option where you lose all info.

Hi csmfox,

This is very disheartening as it worked both times for me. I understand how frustrating this is. I have never seen a problem like this happen with NIS until now.

I do have a concern about the possibility that the ID safe backup file could be overwritten at some point with the primary (bad) one and I am beginning to fear this may have happened.

Can you check one other thing for me? Right click on the IDDStore.dat file and select Properties. Then click on the "Previous Versions" tab. Does this say there are no previous vesions or does it show that there are previous versions of the file? If any potential previous version of the file pre-dates your upgrade to NIS 2011 then highlight that entry and click on "Restore". Please note that you will need to once again turn OFF Norton Product Tamper Protection. Do the same on the IDDStore.dat which you copied to your desktop.

I don't think you are going to see previous versions of the file but it is worth a shot.

I am doing some further testing to see if I can come up with another method of recovering this data.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Kiki,

YES, absolutely. :smileyhappy: Does the ID safe on the other computer contain the same logins?

Here's what you need to do. On the other computer in which it is functioning, go into Web Settings and click on "Backup Identity Safe Data". Choose a password if desired and then save the backup to a removable drive such as a USB flash drive or hard drive.

Then take the media to the problem computer and go into  Web Settings. Attempt to login twice where you are presented with the option to RESET your ID safe. Click on the reset option and choose a password. This will initialize ID safe to default. THEN, log into ID Safe and click on "Restore Identity Safe Data". Browse to the media where you saved the backup and supply password (if any). This will restore the ID safe from your other computer to the problem one.

This should bring it back.

Note for everyone else having this problem. If you do have a second computer with a functioning ID safe which contains the same logins as the problem computer, please perform the same steps if my previously outlined solution does not work.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Unfortunately no previous versions are available.  At this point I am beginning to think that Norton should give us all an extra free year of protection for all this aggrevation - the upgrade process definitely should have created a backup.  Fortunately most of my passwords were written down and I will just have to create a new profile.  You better believe I will do an actual backup following completion (NPM file) and copy that into a couple of places.

This just happened to me. Why won't my password work anymore? I did not change it I just upgraded from NIS2010 to NIS2011 and now it tells me that the Identity Safe password that I have been using for 3 years is incorrect. I have a lot of information in my safe that I will have a difficult to impossible time to get this information again.

Is there anyway to get into it to print the login and passwords out?

Can the upgrade be rolled back to the previous version where it worked?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Allen, that worked, gained most of my passowrds back not all but most

Hi Kiki,

Thanks so much for the update. I am pleased that at least you got most of them back. I sure hope the other users have ID safe on a second computer which contains the same logins.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering I am not from Symantec.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Folks,

If any of you are considering creating a whole new ID safe profile please make sure you back up the IDDStore.dat and IDDStore_bak.dat files to your desktop or other location before you start your new profile.

As I am still working with Symantec I'm hoping that we can come up with something to recover this.

By saving these files you will make it possible to use them later should we come up with a solution.

Also I would encourage any who have not tried my earlier solution, give it a try. The solution worked for me and it might work for you as well and if it doesn't you are no worse off. I think the key is that if the procedure is done before NIS has overwritten the backup ID safe file with the "bad" one it should work. If NIS has overwritten it then it probably won't work.

i seem to have this problem too. Noticed it day or so ago. but was over here looking a the boards and noticed this posting.

I have NIS 2011 on my notebook and it runs windows 7 home 64, and I was updating a usb drive with my latest Passwords from another computer that uses windows xp pro. anyway, when I goto use that key or usb drive on my notebook it doesn't like my password and I've tested it again today with three other usb keys and on any computer that uses nis2011 it will not work if I've used it on a nis2010. yet the strange part is it works on NIS2010 if I try it again after using it on NIS2011.  I am going to update that computer and see if it goes away with NIS 2011 on all my systems. but I have not had time as I have not been feeling all that good.

Like you guys have said if you back up your key and if you haven't you should. try creating a new backup and re-storing your old backup to your computer that is having this problme and it should work again. but if you use that key on another system it will some how get corrupted. Not sure really why as I didn't have any problems in the past..

Problem is that I asked this before and people are indicating they had not made a backup of ID safe.

Hi Folks,

This thread is quite long so I want to ask the question again:

How many of you have a second computer in which ID safe is working correctly and has the same or similar logins?

If you have a second computer with a working ID safe you can recover your data by following the procedure below:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/HELP-Can-t-log-into-Identity-Safe-after-clicking-on-Norton/m-p/346390/highlight/true#M139689

If you do not have a second computer which has the same login data and in which ID safe is working, please once again try the procedure below. It may or may not work but it is worth a try.

My new profile is stored on a different drive so I am assuming that I am ok with the dat files.  Thanks Allen for your efforts to find a resolution.  Ironically I called Norton prior to installation to ask if there was anything special to do prior to the upgrade even have a case # for the call) as I was concerned about compatibility of the password file from 2010 to 2011.
