This is on a clean install of Vista 64 Ultimate, on a brand new SATA drive.

Installed Vista & the modem driver, & downloaded all the Windows & Ultimate extra updates.

Installed NIS & get error messages (using I.E 7) 696 & 793 (I think) denying my connection to the net.

Have not changed any settings manually & can’t understand why I cannot connect (had no problems with NIS 2007 last year)

Any help is gratefully received.

There are two predominate versions of Norton Internet Security 2008 – 15.0 and 15.5. If you don’t have 15.5, you should get it because it has some major improvements in its network handling for Vista. So long as your subscription is still active, you can upgrade to the newer version which can be found here-> New NIS package.

and ...

Have tried to switch off the firewall & nothing happened, ATM I am using AVG 8(free).  This is better than nothing, but I paid for Norton, & it has a much better Firewall than Windows.

Please ask for any more details as I probably left off something important.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you are having problems.

Vista 64 is known to have problems by the legion - mostly driver related (see google).  And although NIS is supposed to be OK with Vista 64, based on the answer from a Symantec tech support person, I'd hold off throwing a party and installing it any time soon.  It was interesting to see this post while researching your problem ... naughty promotion perhaps?  But then that post was in March and things change.  The site (Start on 64) is dedicated to all things 64 bit ... and has the look of an enthusiasts hideout.

It's your choice whether or not to install Vista 64.  Unless you have compelling reasons for doing a 64 bit install (none come to mind) then maybe you might consider going for the bog standard 32 bit flavour.  Enthusiasts and a few environment / application specific users go for 64 bit VISTA otherwise the trade-off (problems / utility) is to high.

As for installing this on a brand new SATA drive - cool.  And you were using 64 bit drivers throughout the install?   This includes SATA drivers and NIC and all devices.  Until everything (including drivers for your router / modem etc] are Vista 64 bit compatible - tried and tested - then IMHO, I'd expect that you will see a slew of problems ... one after another.

NIS support for Vista 64 is limited and unlikely to be expanded (unless user numbers increase ... unlikely at present).

I've followed the 32 bit v 64 bit debate for a while before losing interest.  Promises did not meet reality and I've heard no-one shout about how fantastic life has been in a 64 bit world (real world that is).  See this article for a reasonable comaprison and warning about mixing and matching drivers (which is really what I think lies at the heart of your current problem).

Try going with a standard 32 bit Vista install.  You will sleep better :)

If you happen to get this to work let us know ... be interested ...

Cheers.

Reese Anschultz -

Don't know what version I have, but as I couldn't access the net I couldn't activate my subscription. (d/l new version now & will post the results)

Mcullet -

Like Norton My Vista is OEM & only comes in 64 bit flavor. Have been using it for 20 months & haven't had many problems with drivers (although I did have to d/l  the driver for my Speedtouch modem)

Yea, d/l version up & running, thank you for the help

Hi again,

Glad to here the issue is resolved.

If you are interested, you *might* be able to get a 32 bit version of Vista from MS.  I'm surprised to hear you were given only the 32 bit version 20 months ago especially when MS knew (and have known for a very long time) that the 64 bit flavour had limited market acceptance with few real world (read: commonplace) applications.

This is al old issue made new - to anyone who recalls the moves from 8 bit ... to 16 bit and then whoa 32 bit processing.  Each iteration pushed the industry into new directions.  I'm unware of anything that the 64 bit flavour of Vista has made to real world use.

It's a pity.

Anyway ... I'd approach your local friendly MS folk to beg a nifty 32 bit Vista media.  It's not a problem here (Australia) - and worth the effort.  You might even notice a perfoamcne INCREASE by moving to 32 bit ... take too long to explain why.

Cheers.

OEM is different -- what the manufacturer puts on the hard drive is what you get and while for example my VISTA Ultimate "retail" came with DVDs for 32 and 64-bit versions the OEMs only supply one.

Have you been able to do this with a commercial computer supplied with VISTA on it? Here Microsoft would just say "speak to the PC manufacturer" and they would say "we are not allowed to under our licence from Microsoft" 8:(

Hi Huwngr,

Yeah - I know OEM (original equipment manfucturer) is 'different'.  But the response you get from MS can differ from OEM to OEM.  You won't really know unless you give it a go.

I've managed to get new media from MS - for XP PRO on a Dell notebook.  I wasn't interested too much in the stuff on the DELL OEM disk (roll my own).  If you just purchased the PC from an large "named" OEM then I doubt you will get any joy at all.

Dell, the one I'm most recently familiar with, were unhelpful so I worked around them.

Some of this is a bit of luck and experience.  For example, I have a large number of valid XP PRO licences (some branded OEM - some not).  I need just one to prove I have a legitimate licence and get the new media.  The DELL keys will be OK (at least they worked for me when i last did it).

It's not a perfect solution but worth a try.

Thanks for the details -- I'm dubious that it would happen here in the USA 8:(

I knew that you knew but I was thinking of our gentle readers ....

My machine was self built, so got this software from with it when I got the hardware (got NIS2008 when I got the new HDD)

TBH I haven't had any real issues with running 64 bit OS & am happy with it.

Don't seem to be able to edit post.
