First download Norton Antibot. http://nct.symantecstore.com/fulfill/0184.064

Install. It will most likely catch something and quarientine it. Then download Norton 2009 from here:

http://nct.digitalriver.com/fulfill/0184.077

Install. You are entitled to a free upgrade from 2006==>2009.

Run a full system scan with 2009.

Your using a 3 year old outdated virus scan and also using POP3 email (Outlook). Sounds like you got an email bomb bug. Best to upgrade to NIS 2009 or NAV 2009. Also do not use Outlook. Use web based email. Its safer.

It may be too late for my laptop.

I downloaded both programs and installed the anti-bot finder/tracker program (I didn’t know that came with an additional cost!), but it (Norton’s Antibot) found nothing at all.  There didn’t seem to be any sort of scan button that I could see either. AntiBot did say it was “enabled.”

After installing the Anti-bot program I then proceeded to install Norton 2009, but it would seem I’d have to pay for that.  I didn’t see anything about an upgrade.  The installation program simply asked that I remove the previous version of Norton. Since I’ve already purchased Norton I opted out of purchasing another copy.

Then I rebooted thinking that, perhaps, this would allow the Anti-bot program find whatever has invaded my laptop effectively turning it into an email spam machine.

Unfortunately, I get a blue screen of death (as they say) while booting (the computer is able to make it to the windows desktop during the boot process, but as things continue to load I get this blue screen that halts everything and forces me to remove power so that I can reboot once more.)  I’ve rebooted four times thus far with the same results.

I can boot in safe mode and while in safe mode I ran Anti-Bot and pressed the “start” button, but upon doing so I got an error message saying,  “SymantecAntibBotWatcher service is not available. Please start the SymantecAntiBotWatcher service form the control panel and try again”

Well, if there are any other ideas let me know. I might be willing to try (assuming I can get the computer on its feet again).  As a side note, it is best if the laptop isn’t connected to the internet considering it spends nearly all of its processing time trying to send spam (using the “block traffic” button in Norton stops this).

Dieselman743,

As I have stated in my first post I use a web email system therefore I am not using POP3 and I do not use Outlook.

David

Silver, you didn't say what Norton 2006 product you have.

If you have Norton Antivirus 2006 with a current subscription, you are entitled to a free upgrade to NAV2009.  Download the TRIAL version of this and it will pick up the activation key during the install.

If you have Norton Internet Security 2006 with a current subscription, you are entitled to a free upgrade to NIS2009.  Same advice as above.

If you have Norton Systemworks Standard 2006 with a current subscription, you are entitled to a free upgrade to NSW Standard 2009.  Same advice as above.

All this being said, only NIS has a strong firewall built into the product.  Personally, I would advise you to get this, free or not.  The virus you have is one of a nasty series of viruses.  You probably got it by opening an attachment to an email.  These viruses (worms) embed themselves in your system and then use your address book to send copies of themselves under your email name to a certain number of people in your address book.  Depending on the worm, they also make your computer vulnerable in a number of other ways; and they sometimes attack the security software itself.  Early products from 2006 are simply not as sophisticated in resisting these attacks as current products.

Pain in the rear, though it may be, I would myself reimage my harddrive with a recent backup if I had one (and I make sure to have them), then swap security programs up to NIS 2009.  Make sure you backup all vital data before reimaging or reformatting. Also, make sure you have your Norton product activation key.

Other people here will tell you that you can get rid of this virus/worm without reformatting or reimaging.  That is your choice.  They are probably correct.

Hi silver_mica,

Here is the correct link to update your 2006 Product at no charge.

Before you attempt to download and install the 2009 version I would recommend this:

Since you had no result from Norton AntiBot, I would suggest downloading the FREE version of Malwarebytes.

Install it, check for updates, then unplug from the internet and run a Malwarebytes Full System scan in Safe Mode.

Keep us posted.

Edit: I was posting at the same time as mijcar, hope there is no confusion.

I have Norton Internet Security 2006 installed on my laptop.   My laptop, petty much, cannot boot anymore unless I’m in safe mode.  I think it is near death at this point.

Phil_D,

Thanks for the link.  My laptop essentially cannot run anymore unless it is in safe mode.  Also, when it was running it was preoccupied with sending spam and therefore it might be exceedingly difficult to check for updates on that machine.  I'm using another computer for all internet access for this reason (in addition to my laptop being effectively dead now).

silver_mica,

Understood.

Try downloading the Malwarebytes using another computer, save it to a flash drive and then install it on the problem machine.

Best Wishes.

If Norton is scanning your email then you have to be using Outlook or something. Do you log into a web site to view your email like I do with Yahoo? Run Malware Bytes in safe mode like Phil stated. Your laptop cannot send out 50 emails unless your using Outlook. Logging into Yahoo or MSN does not do that.

Phil_D,

I take it that Malwarebytes can be installed on my laptop running in safe mode without an internet connection?

I've already downloaded AntiBot from a functioning computer, and then transferred the exe file to the dysfunctional laptop using my thumb drive.

You need to be connected to the internet for malware bytes to update before running a scan. Use safe mode with networking.

Dieselman743,

As stated in my first post and reiterated here I use a web based email therefore that implies that I do not rely upon a POP3 server to view my email and I do not use Outlook (or similar).   To be clear I will now state for the record that, I, David S. do not use Outlook, I do not use a POP3 server to receive email and I only use web email on my laptop.  Furthermore, web email does not use Outlook and, typically, does not use a POP3 server (as is the case with my web email).

Hope that helps.

Ok then how do you check your email? How is your latop sending out email? What program is doing this? Do you use Yahoo email? Do you use MSN email? Do you use Gmail?

You stated Norton is scanning your messages? What messages?

Is this for real?

As stated numerous times throughout this thread I use web based email. Specifically, I use earthlink and Yahoo.  I do have a gmail account as well, but do not use that very often.

My laptop is attempting to send out email because it has a virus of some type.

David

Thank you for anwering the completely reasonable question as to what you actually use to download via webmail.

I take it from your other post that you are giving up on cleaning up any infections and installing NIS2009 on the laptop as it is and will start from new on the laptop.

Do you have the manufacturer's recovery disks since you will need all the special files that laptops tend to need much more than desktops?

You should thank me for having to put up with unreasonable assumptions that I use Outlook.  Read what I have written and you will learn.

You didnt get the virus from Yahoo. Does Earthlink do a virus checlk of emails when you log into the site? Silver not once did you state what web based email you used. Now you have. But how is your pc sending out emails? How is the happpening. This is what you said in your first post. If you use web based email and log into a site to check your email Norton does not scan those emails. It will only scan Outlook emails. I am only going off what you stated.

3) Norton scans each message and you see over 50 little boxes that fill the entire screen informing me of each message being scanned
