Help needed. fixtdss.exe = computer crash. Won't boot?

Please bear with me as I'm quite frustrated. I have an HP desktop with Windows Vista.

The previous night, I happened upon what, in retrospect, were some possibly shady websites.

Soon thereafter, I recieved a popup from my Norton 360 (which I just so happened to recently renew) stating that a fixtdss.exe program was needed to manually uninstall and rid the computer of this problem (tidserv? tdss.exe? I'm not too sure?).

Long story short, I downloaded the program and ran it. Part way into the scan, it freezes and the whole computer shuts down and restarts.

But now, the computer won't even 'boot' I'm assuming is the correct term for it. It flashes the blue HP screen with the small menu at the bottom, and then gets as far as the Microsoft loading bar which follows.

Part ways into that, it flashes and remains on a blue screen which states that "A problem has been detected and your computer has been shut down to prevent damage...Technical Information Stop:0x0000...etc..." It lists a bit of letters and numbers and then collects data for crash dump...initilizing data for crash dump...etc..

Even after the black f8 screen, safe mode won't start up either.

What happens now? I would really like to salvage the data I had on that computer. Right now I'm posting from my girlfriend's mac book, and don't know where to even begin...Is the key in a tdss.exe trojan or something has infected my computer and disabled my master boot loader as some other forums have speculated? How do I even fix this or clean the infections out when the computer won't even load to the desktop?

PLEASE HELP. While I have seen this issue all over the web, I haven’t seen solutions.
I unfortunately downloaded and ran FixTDSS.exe on my Windows7, 64 bit laptop.
It seemed to run okay & after re-booting asked me about fixing my NBR.
I stupidly clicked yes. It told me it worked, so I re-booted. It couldn’t reboot.
I have run the Windows7 startup recovery from my hard drive & my Windows7 install DVD.
No luck.
Anyone have any thoughts on how I can get Windows7 to work again?

I ran the program to stop the annoying “Google” redirect. Aside from that, my laptop has had no problems until I ran d FixTDSS.exe.

may be we sould be more carefull on what we downloded  from the internet

GBsurf and jolo100,

Please take Quads recommendation and sign up for ONE (1) of the malware removal sites and stick with that one only.

About being cautious about downloading from the Internet. I agree. That is why I made sure that I downloaded fixtdss.exe from the Norton/Symantec site.

Hi jolo100,

I understand your concern.  The links to the malware removal sites I have provided are all trained specialists.  Here at the Norton Community,  most of us are volunteers.  That is why I have recommended them to you.
