Help please - Norton internet security - keyloggers

Hi

Can anyone help please. I have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed and up to date on my PC.

I gave access to someone to my PC for a brief period of time a few months ago to access their hotmail. Due to having to take a call I was away for 30 minutes or so and on my return the person had a memory stick in my PC and was attaching a photo to their email. No problem - or so I thought. Anyway a few weeks later this same person was discussing with a mutual friend of ours placing a keylogger on their ex wifes computer and went on to explain how they had done it before etc etc. Without boring you further my friendship with this individual is no longer. I am now totally paranoid they have put a keylogger on my PC. I know I was stupid but trusted the individual totally at the time. Bottom line - Will my norton pick up the keylogger?

Thanks very much for the reply.

I have windows vista ultimate service. pack 1

What shall I do now> Do i need to update?

Regards

Hi mikeymikey:

It gets a bit more involved in this case, but the end result is the same.

Does Vista SP2 come up in the list when you invoke Microsoft Update?

We could go from there.

Thanks.

mikeymikey,  If you would like a second or third check on your PC, you might consider downloading and running the free versions of Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware.  They only run when you click on them so they shouldn’t cause any problems with NIS 2009 or 2010.  Make sure you also download their latest updates.  I don’t know the addresses but look at a few of these post and I’m sure you’ll find the links.

 Hi

yes I have now installed service pack 2.

Where now? Oh and thanks very much for teh very quick reply,

ta

Hi mikeymikey:

I didn't say to install SP2 just yet, but that's OK. :smileywink:

What were the results of the NIS 2009 Full System Scan?

If it is clear, I would like you to make note of your NIS Product Key via Norton Account or physical CD package.

We will now run the NRT (Norton Removal Tool) found here.

Please disconnect from the Internet, run it, reboot, run it one final time and reboot again.

Once done, reconnect to the Internet, download and install NIS 2010 from this link. Remember that Product Key.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks.

Now to really confuse matters - im writing all this to you on my in laws PC where as my laptop which is the issue is next to me so i cant access the link you gave me. Sorry to be a pain! It is online but due to the concerns didnt want to type too much on it.

what now?

Hi mikeymikey:

You updated the Laptop in question to Vista SP2, correct?

Bit confused here.

Sorry - yes i updated the laptop (of which i have the concerns) to SP2 this evening. It has up to date NIS 2009 on it

Hi mikeymikey:

OK.

What were the results of the NIS 2009 Full System Scan?

Were any threats detected?

Sorry Plankton im currently running the full system scan will get back as soon as it finishes - thanks

ok - have run the full scan and it came back with one tracking cookie having been detected says low risk. Nothing else.

Hi mikeymikey:

Good! Let NIS delete the tracking cookie.

Please proceed with the NRT/NIS 2010 procedure which I had previously indicated.

Let me know if it solves your issue.

Thanks.

You gave me a link to the NRT procedure but that is on this PC I am messaging you on not the laptop I am doing all this for. What do i do on the laptop to achieve the same as the link? Thanks

Hi mikeymikey:

Please connect the Laptop in question to the Internet, login to the Norton Forums, to access the links in the post and download these 2 files (NRT and NIS 2010) directly to the system.

Note their location when you download them - the Vista desktop is a good place.

Are we on target? :smileyhappy:

when i click on the NRT link it comes up with 2010 removal tool. i have 2009 - is this ok?

Hi mikeymikey:

Yes. It also applies to NIS 2009.

Ok here goes  - I ran the tool and it removed norton from my laptop. I then reinstalled norton having followed the screen prompts. In your initial message you say run it reboot and run it again. are you saying i should remove the new installed Norton and reinstall it again or just carry on with the new 2010 install and run a scan with that? Sorry if i sound thick but im not very technically minded im afraid, thanks again

Hi mikeymikey:

No problem.

Is NIS 2010 installed, updated and running to your satisfaction?

If so, perform a Full System Scan again. If clean, you are done.

Kindly advise.

Thanks.
