Help please - Norton internet security - keyloggers

Hi mikeymikey:

What is your current status?

Hi - ok - I think all is going ok. The full system scan is still running on my laptop - not long to go. Currently two tracking cookies found. The only bit I didnt do that you suggested was this bit - (Please disconnect from the Internet, run it, reboot, run it one final time and reboot again) is that ok?

So i have removed norton - reinstalled it 2010 and have updated and then run a full scan. if at the end of the scan nothing other than the cookies is found how confident are you (going back to my original question) that i dont have a keylogger installed on my laptop?

Ta

Hi mikeymikey:

It will do, no worries.

I'm pleased about the result, that's for sure! Your system appears to be clean.

If you wish, there is another program called Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org) which you can use together with NIS 2010 - think of it as a second opinion. It is free, installs and updates easily and you could run it whenever you do your regular NIS Full System Scans.

If you feel that your original issue has been solved, kindly click the green box marked "Solution" in the most appropriate post (in the thread,) so that others on the forum will benefit from this experience.

Many thanks.

Will norton tell me now if there was a keylogger on it?

thanks very very much for resolving this for me, i really appreciate it I really do -

regards Mike

Hi mikeymikey:

It would seem that there are no indicatons of a Keylogger.

If the scan completed cleanly (don't worry about the tracking cookies,) then you are good to go!

Glad to be of assistance.

Hi mikeymikey

Here is a link that explains what a keylogger program is. Please take a look at that site. It will help to explain to you what a keylogger program is.

http://antivirus.about.com/od/whatisavirus/a/keylogger.htm

I would suggest having Malwarebytes clean up what it found. Do you use sites like P2P?  You have malware on your computer which needs to be cleaned up.

Hi thanks for the reply. I know what a keylogger is but dont know what it would show up as on the scan log. Would it say "keylogger"? or be called something else?

Hi Mikeymikey

The malware that is showing up now causes popups and tracks the sites you have to. I would have malwarebytes clean up what it found. It's important to clean up malware as soon as possible. Sometimes the word keylogger might be in the name of the malware.

Another good program you can use for a backup scanner is SuperAntiMalware. That is also an on demand scanner which won't interfere with your norton product.

Here is a free on demand antimalware scanner. It is safe to use on demand with your Norton product.

Hi mikeymikey:

As floplot said, let MBAM correct these minor detections and then that should be it.

Between these two programs (NIS 2010 and MBAM) you should have a nice clean system.

Do the NIS 2010 and MBAM Full System Scan at least 2x per week, IMO. First run NIS, then run MBAM second.

Be sure to update the MBAM definitions before you scan with it.

You can also do the NIS Full System Scan (FSS) overnight.

Let them correct anything that they find.

Have a Happy New Year!

Thanks guys - so from the list of stuff I posted above that was found are you sure these arent keyloggers ?

Hi mikeymikey:

It would look that way!

Nothing in this business is etched in stone, but I would not worry after all you have done.

Cheers!
