Thanks, I'll try turning off Defender and let you know.

Hi blueslady138,

Thanks, we'll be here for the result and will assist further if this does not resolve the problem.

Best wishes.

Hello-

I disabled Windows Defender but have the same result. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all of your help.

Linda

I received error message 8504,100 which instructs me to uninstall & re-install which I have done 4 times.

Did Norton internet security ever work fine for you?

Did you have the 2010 version up and running for some time with no problems before this started?

Besides MalwareBytes and windows defender, do you have any other scanners or real time programs installed.

Even if they caused you no trouble in the past, please look though your programs for any type of AV, anti-spyware, anti-trojan, or security programs.

Dave

Dave- I had NIS 2010 installed and operating fine up until the beginning of June. I also use Spybot. I didn't think to turn that off since it has been working with NIS ever since the beginning. Does that help?

Hi blueslady138,

At the end of May I also had a problem with error 8504,100 for my NIS 2011. Link

Using Norton Removal Tool  and re-installing worked for me as per this article:   Error 8504,100

I have Windows XP, so it's different, but I do know that it wasn't caused by malware.

Hope it's the same in your case and you can find a way to install it.

Alex.

HI blueslady138,

Spybot can interfere with your Norton software so you need to make sure the Tea Timer option is DISABLED. Spybot without Tea Timer should work OK. Try disabling this and restarting your computer and see if things looks better.

Also, from one of your earlier posts you said:

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Service pack 2. Windows updates has been trying to install an update since 4/12/11 but it fails to install. The update is "Security update for Microsoft .Net framework 4 on Windows XP, Vista".

On 6/3 an update to Windows Defender installed. It is called "Definition update for Windows Defender-KB915597 (definition 1.105.1184.0)". This is when my problem with Norton started.

These could also be related. One more thing to check on Windows Defender. Please go to start menu and type in "services" in the search box, then hit Return. In the Component Services window click on "Services (Local)" in the left window pane. On the right window pane scroll to near the bottom and find the Windows Defender service. The service probably shows "Manual" in the Startup type column. Is this correct or does it show something else?

Go ahead and double click the Windows Defender service. In the Windows Defender Properties window make sure the "General" tab is displayed, the click on the box next to "Startup type" and select "Disabled" from the list. This will further ensure that no part of Windows Defender should be able to run.

Restart the computer after the above.

If the above actions do not make a difference then please go to Control Panel and set "View By" to "Category". This can be seen on the upper right of the Control Panel screen. Then click on System and Security > View Installed Updates. Find the Windows Defender update you said occurred on 6/3 and see if you can uninstall this update.

Also, I have a concern on the update related to .NET framework. Norton does use portions of this module so this could also be causing a problem. Please go to Control Panel > Uninstall a program and scroll down until you find all the .NET framework related entries. Please tell me all the information for any and all .NET framework entries in this list.

Thanks and best wishes.

Allen

From what I am reading here, it could be just because Norton was installed several times while the other security software was running.  Spybot interferes with changes to the registry whether Teatimer is enabled or not.  If we can get Windows Defender disabled, and Spybot removed, we should be able to get a clean installation of Norton.  I think that Spybot could then be reinstalled without Teatimer if the user wishes.  I don't see that a clean installation was done up to this point.

Hi Delph,

From what i read here the OP indicates having used the removal tool.

Allen

Allen-

I was unable to find a way in Spybot to disable Tea Timer or even find that listed as an option. I am using version 1.6.0.030

I was unable to uninstall the Windows Defender update that was installed on 6/3/11. It says this cannot be uninstalled once it has installed.

There is an update that has been trying to install since 4/17/11 but has failed every time. It is a security update for .Net framework (KB2446708). Error details code 66A. The description of the update says "A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows based system that is running the .Net Framework and gain complete control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update" For help with this update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2446708

Do you think this is my problem?

I changed the option for Windows Defender to Disabled and re-started my computer. No change.

There are 2 entries for the .Net framework:

Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 intsalled on 2/15/09 27.8 MB

Microsoft .Net Framework 4 Client Profile installed on 11/23/10 (nothing listed for size)

When I double clicked on the Framework 4 entry it says: an error occured while trying to uninstall. It may have already been uninstalled. It then asks if I would like to remove from the Programs & Features list. I said no.

I really appreciate your time & effort on this.

Linda

Hi Linda,

Regarding the tea timer option, I don't use Spybot myself but there should be an option there for this. I found the following thread from Spybot support forum but it is from 2006 so I don't know if it still applies:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2827

Another thread on this:

http://forums.techarena.in/networking-security/1321759.htm

Regarding the .NET framework issue. I really cannot say that this is causing your problem, just that it is possible. We really cannot know until it is resolved and then see if you still have the problem with Norton.

I can say however that the error you are getting on .NET framework is not good and should be corrected, regardless of whether it is causing the problem with Norton or not.

I noticed in the Microsoft KB link you referenced that it has a toll free number offering free support for this security update. I would suggest calling that number and seeing if they can help you. I don't know if the problem you are having will ultimately qualify for free support but Microsoft should be able to answer that for you.

I could probably help you with getting the .NET framework issue resolved but if possible it would be better coming from Microsoft. It is made more complicated if you cannot even uninstall it. Normally one of the first workarounds would be to uninstall all versions and reinstall but your obviously not going to be able to do that in the conventional way.

Please let us know how it goes after speaking with Microsoft.

Best wishes.

Allen

From what i read here the OP indicates having used the removal tool.

The removal tool has difficulty working properly during interference by other products, so I don't see that as making much difference.  It could in fact cause the tool to do things it shouldn't.  Spybot is still on the machine and Teatimer is still enabled.  It is a good idea to check into the .net framework problem, but I think Spybot will still need to be removed.

Since it's for troubleshooting why not uninstall Spybot completely and clean up

Here are their detailed step by step including manual after-cleanup.

Then if you want to you can reinstall later.

Hi Delph,

Agreed, that is a good point.

There are clearly a few things going on here and the .NET framework issue just clouds things more.

I did find it interesting that the OP reported the problem seemed to start around the time that a Windows Defender update came in though.

Hello again- I spent 4 hours on the phone with MS and resolved the .Net issue. I disabled Windows Defender, I removed Spybot, I used the Norton removal tool and re-installed Norton. Same problem. It says it installed but will not open. I am not asked for my registration key at any time. I feel like something is blocking the installation from completing the process even though it tells me it is installed. I am exhausted tonight but will have another go at it tomorrow night.

HI blueslady138,

Thanks very much for the update. I'm happy to see that you have the .NET framework issue resolved as well - at least that is something positive at this point.

Just to confirm - did you completely remove Spybot before running the Norton removal tool? I would also recommend that you run the Norton removal tool twice with a reboot in between each run.

Finally I have seen reports that Spybot can be a bit tricky to remove completely, therefore please see the following links:

Follow up to Control Panel Uninstall

Registry Cleanup and the associated forum discussion are here.

The registry cleanup is a bit cleaner using this link. You can copy the contents into a Notepad then save the file with something like "spybot.reg" to your desktop. You can then double click this file and it will remove the Spybot entries from the registry.

I would recommend to do the addtional cleanup of Spybot as mentioned at the above links, then use the Norton removal tool again as indicated earlier to run it twice with a reboot in between each one and at the end, followed by reinstalling Norton.

At this point I cannot say that Spybot remnants are causing the issue with NIS but the above would at least ensure that it is not the issue.

If this still does not allow NIS to install correctly (and of course be usable) then I will ask Symantec staff to take a look and they will probably want the installation logs from your system. More on that if we get to that point.

Please do let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Hi Linda,

I mentioned earlier that I took note of the fact that you said this problem seemed to start around the time that there was an update to Windows Defender on 6/3/2011. I've got a nagging feeling about that update and I hope it proves not to be causal but I wanted to let you know that I am keeping this data point in mind.

Best wishes.

Hi Allen-

I am having a problem removing Spy Bot completely. I used the Uninstall option from Add/Remoe programs. It seems there is still something on the computer. I tried the link you mentioned about the registry but didn;t fully understand it. I will have more time to play on the weekend and will see what I can do to remove SpyBot. Then I will try the removal tool 2 x as you suggest and then installing NIS again. Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Linda,

Apart from the registry issue, why do you believe there are still remnants of SpyBot?

To do the registry piece, just go to this link and you will need to highlight all the test on that page and hit Ctrl + C on your keyboard. Then bring up Notepad and press Ctrl + V. This will paste the contents of that page into Notepad.

Then do File > Save As and save the file to your desktop with a name of something like spybot.reg. Once saved, simply double click the file and it will remove the spybot related keys from your registry.

Please note that it is important to save the file with the ".reg" suffix or you will not be able to run it.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

I am still seeing Spybot in my program files list. When I try to delete it I get an error message saying I need permission to do this. I have been unable to find a way around this. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.
