After installing Norton Internet Security 2012 I cannot operate any of my vital programs such as Microsoft office and explorer or chrome… I just downloaded this protection today as I am starting avery important online program and this is putting me back. Such an expected disappointment and delay for all my work and study. Please guide me to the right action in this situation. Is this common? I seen few posts online complaining and I did not see satisfying replies so far. I seen something about rebooting to an earlier point. How? Any advice appreciated. Best.
Apology. I thought mine was 360. Turned out it is NIS. So maybe I should be in the other thread that I was moved from? Help.
You can try the solved in this thread http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/NIS-360-has-wrecked-my-laptop/td-p/733276
Or use System Restore to use a Restore point to before Norton was installed (say yesterday) .

Quads,
Thanks for your reply. I read the thread but I feel worried to start acting on it because I might not have the exact same situation. I wish I get someone to reply to me step by step like that other thread. How can I get such help?
I have to say since last night, I did reboot to a previous point (8 days ago) and my programs are back, but the Norton that I downloaded yesterday does not work. It has an icon in program list but not working! I have the 3 devices NIS offer. If I remove NIS again would that be counted as my second attempt? :( What should I do? Help.
Just to be sure...do you have NIS 2012 or the new NIS 2013 version 20 installed.

Thanks for the reply.
It is NIS 2012 (the one I did yesterday). Before that I always used norton products, but I have none from th eold installed at this point and I uninstalled a McCaffe that was there without my knowledge!
Did you use the McAffe Removal tool to completely remove that program ? Remnants leftover from another security program will conflict with Norton.
I used the control pannel uninstall button from programs. Does that do the trick? What should I do next?
As the restore got back your programmes but has left you with remenants of the Norton installation what you can try is run the Norton removal tool & see if that removes the leftovers from Norton product & then as you've also said that you'd previously has McAfee on the computer you should also find & run the removal tool for that software, then hopefully a reinstall of NIS will not affect your other programmes.
Doctor9fan... Thank yo so much.
This removal tool is it the same as the Control Pannel Program uninstallation method? And, when I reinstall the NIS do I loose one of the three devices protection (my pack was good for 3 devices and not sure it will be now or not). Thanks again.I really appreciate it.

Here is the link to the special McAfee tool that needs to be run AFTER doing the normal uninstall because most security programs leave things behind after the normal uninstall that can affect subsequent installations.
After you first installed your NIS 2012 did you set up the Identity Safe local vault? If so make sure you export it to a safe place so you can import it after installing NIS again.
Then to reinstall NIS after uninstalling with the Windows uninstaller and running the Norton Removal Tool you can either reinstall using whatever you first used to install NIS 2012 (but that will be very out of date if it was a disk) or you can download the file below which is a one piece installation file that is nearly the last issue of NIS 2012 if not actually the last release:
Click on this link -- NIS 2012 This will download a single file of around 100MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!
Then after doing all the above, go to where that downloaded file was saved and Run it to install NIS 2012 .... and hopefully all will be well. But don't forget to run the Norton LiveUpdate manually a few times with a reboot inbetween until it tells you that your NIS is fully uptodate.
If by any chance all this has used up another activation from the three do not worry -- just get in touch with the Norton OnLine Customer Support via the CHAT route as below, which uses your computer keyboard not the phone, and tell them what you have had to do and they will reset the database.
To contact customer support Click on this link https://www.norton.com/chat and work on from there.
Please let us know how you get on ....
Thank you so much for teh detailed reply. I am working on your steps one by one. I uninstalled the mccafe wit teh tool provided. Now as to teh second part:
Quote: "After you first installed your NIS 2012 did you set up the Identity Safe local vault? If so make sure you export it to a safe place so you can import it after installing NIS again."
I am not sure I know what is this or if I did it or not. :(. What should I know in this case? So that I can continue your steps.
The Identity Safe is a place that stores passwords and log in information for websites you use and can log you in automatically when you click on a shortcut to them.
You would remember I suspect since you would have to open the Idenity Safe part of NIS, give it a password that only you would know if you want only you to use it, and then arrange for all the login and password data to be entered.
Hope that clarifies but if not please ask first .... <s>
Thanks. I don't think I did this. And now NIS does not even open for me to check. It says "entry point" lost or unspecified and the like error messages. So can I proceed without this step? By uninstalling NIS through control pannel and then through uninstall tool and the rest? by the way where can i get the uninstall tool of norton like the one u gave me for mccafe.
Hi whitepass,
When you click Identity Safe on the Norton toolbar, is there a drop down list of websites. If there is, those would be some, or all of your logins you set up to login into websites with one click.

The Norton removal tool will fully uninstall the programme much better than via the control panel, it's always recommended to run the removal tool after uninstalling Norton via the control panel, McAfee's removal tool will fully remove their product.
This is the page to the Norton removal tool: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?actstat=activated&ct=us&docid=v59824633_EndUserProfile_en_us&ispid=&layout=Retail&lg=en&ncoap=1&partner=HP+HPM+CN+P1G%2860%29&product=Norton+Internet+Security&pvid=f-core-cur&q=Norton+removal+tool+2012&sitename=&substatus=current&version=20.1.1.2
You could always set a manual restore point on your computer before doing this if you feel unsure about the results.
edj160 thanks. but i cannot see the norton toolbar. nothing at all opens related to N. So I guess I will just take the risk and uninstall it according to the tool online. and then re-install it from the CD and product keu I have. How is that?
doctor, thanks, i am proceeding with this now. i am uninstalling norton from the tool provided. there is a recovery point with today's date. which is good. I could always return to it. Let's hope my programs don't disappear again like yesterday.
Good to hear that you already have a resore point available & I hope the programmes remain for you after the complete uninstall of Norton.
Good luck!
Thanks to all you guys who helped me. I accepted one as solution but all helped.
Basically I might not have followed all instructions (I skipped the safety one and registering my key). But I followed the removal tool and I think that was the main thing. Because now I did not loose my programs like yesterday when I had to restore to a 10 day past point to get them back and lost NIS on the way.
Because I did not register my key when I used it first time yesterday I could not retrieve it from my account on Norton today, so I had to put the CD in again and re-enter key. I think this might cause me one trial of teh key (maybe now I can only use it on 1 more device rather than another 2 as it suppose to be). If this was the case I might go to my local store and complain about the situation. They might then give me one more trial for the third device we have at home.
Thanks again all.
