I woke up this morning to find that I had a bunch of popups as well as a seemingly continuously changing warning in my system tray indicating that I have infections, malware, trojans, my firewall is off, and all sorts of other baddies. It even tells me what files are problems. These are under the guise of being Windows Security alerts and they apparently want me to buy some security package...for all I know this is just a baddie itself., though my bigger fear is that its accurate and norton is screwed.
I have Norton anti-virus with all the trimmings and the last scan was run on 4/4 without any reports. When I ran a full scan it reported only a problem with a tracking cookie, silly, which I repaired out of sheer boredom. My computer continuously gives me these messages about my computer being under attack. I have disconnected from my internet (wireless) in order to stop anything else from happening, but fear the damage has been done.
Questions for the field:
1. Are these popups and warnings legit?
2. If so, why didn't Norton stop them? And what are my next steps?
3. If not, how do I get rid of these things safely, and how do I get Norton back up and running?
