Hello -- I have NIS v21 installed on my xp (32b) os -- It seems to be cranking at 50% cpu usage .... how can I find out what its doing??
It appears that I did download and run the correct version of Intelligent updater for my version of Norton (20100918-003-v5i32.exe), but as noted, it didn't complete.
I'm running Vista 64bit SP 2.
I have 275 days left on my current subscription for NIS2009. How do I go about getting a free upgrade to NIS2011?
Thanks.
Jim
Hello jdw
Did you pick the next to last one on the bottom since you have 64 bit vista ?
1. Please go to mynortonaccount and get your key just in case you have to enter it.
2.Please back up your identity safe file if you use that
Please follow these instructions to save your Identity Safe information by creating NPM file.

Thanks to Yaso for the link.
3 Please download and save the Norton Removal Tool, but please be aware that will remove all Norton products.
4. Please download and save NIS 2011
http://www.norton.com/nis11
5 Remove NIS 2009 using the control panel and reboot. and stay off the net for now.
6. Please run the Norton Removal Tool 2 times with a reboot after each run. You have to use the Removal Tool because you skipped a year's version and still stay off the net.
7 Run NIS 2011 and connect to the net when it wants to activate
8 Run live update until there are no more updates to get.
Please run all the files as run as Admin since you are using Vista.
Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks
Thanks for the reply.
You are right, I didn't notice that there were two download sections for the same products -- it might be helpful if the top section was labeled "32 Bit" like the bottom one is labeled "64 Bit."
I will download the correct version this morning and give it a shot.
Thanks again.
Before I could run the Updater, NIS started acting strangely. The icon for the NIS control panel in the systray disappeared and I couldn't run it from the Start / Norton folder either. I re-booted and the NIS systray icon came back for about 10 minutes then it went away again.
I downloaded and ran the "remove Norton products" application to completely get rid of NIS.
I then installed a different Anti-virus / security application and it is working great. Using less than 2% of a single core on the processor.
Thanks for the help anyway...
Jim
Hi Jim
It is of course up to you but NIS is actually very light on resources and typically when people have problems like you have had, it is because something has gone wrong with the installation or there is malware or some other cause which is curable.
I'd hate to see you lose days on your subscription when Im sure we could get this working for you.
I would recommend following the procedure Floplot outlined earlier to get you up to NIS 2011.
If you decide to try this again you should use a removal tool to remove all remnants of the new security software you installed.
Best wishes.
Allen
Hi Allen,
Thanks for follow-up.
It could very well be that the issues I was seeing were being caused by some sort of malware, but I've had NIS running on this system for the last couple of years, and I would hate to think that a malware application slipped through the door during its watch.
I'm thinking that something must have glitched during a recent NIS update.
Thanks again.
Jim
Hello jdw
I also hate to see you lose like 9 months of your subscription, but it is your choice to make.
No problem. It's not the first time I've had to change horses in mid stream after I've already paid for the first horse ;-)
The "other AV" I have now running on this system is the same one I have on my other 3 computers. I had only continued to use NIS on this system because was pre-installed as a 90 day trial when I bought the computer. I renewed the subscription a couple of times out of convenience. NIS wasn't an off-the-shelf purchase.
I just felt the safest bet was to just un-install NIS and go with another option.
As before, Thanks for help...

I noticed my system seemed sluggish today so I opened my Task Manager / Performance Monitor and saw that Norton Internet Security CPU usage is pegging at between 25% and 30% on all four processors of my quad processor system. Even after a re-boot the CPU usage remains at least 25%. This CPU usage is also displayed in the Norton control panel.
It doesn't appear that any sort of system scan is in progress. But, even that shouldn't require CPU usage this high.
I read somewhere that it might be caused by a corrupt def file, so I tried downloading the file titled "20100918-003-v5i32.exe" from Norton to attempt to force a complete def update, but it failed to complete. The error log said it couldn't find a compatible application on my system.
The Norton control panel states "Norton Internet Security" in the upper left hand corner and under Help / About the version lists as: 16.8.0.41 -- but I have no idea what product I actually have. Any idea where to find that information in the Norton control panel?
Any one else seeing a high CPU usage over the last day or two?
Thanks.
Jim
While I was down at my mothers running a scan with Superantispyware(free) the Norton Antivirus version 18.1.0.37 popped up to tell me that the cpu usage was high.I run the N360 on my pc and also use the free SAS and have not had this pop up.My mum also told me that the same pop up keeps happening while playing her mahjong game. This has just started to occur after several months of using mahjong and SAS and I was hoping someone can offer some advice on this.Thank you in advance. The pc is running XP service pack 3.
The free version of SUPERAntiSpyware that fuss7749 is using does not have realtime protection running in the background. Fuss7749 stated that the high CPU usage occurred when doing a scan, which is not unexpected. Certain tasks such as virus scans or displaying flash content on a web page are normally resource intensive and alerts for these can be disregarded. Only unexplained high resource use from unexpected sources needs to be investigated. Performance alerts are simply advisories and do not indicate that there is necessarily anything wrong. There are many options for Performance Monitoring under the Miscellaneous Settings tab, including turning off monitoring entirely, disabling alerts, or excluding specific programs.
If sas does not have realtime protection, why does it load a notification area icon.

You can turn that off in Preferences. And while you're at it, in the free version, go to the Real Time Protection tab and enable Real TIme Protection - see what happens.
Tywin7,I also use Malwarebytes(free). Both SAS(free) and Malwarebytes(free) are on demand scanners. This was recommended on the N360 forum and it has served me well.SendOf Jive, thanks for that.I had already turned off the notification for the mahjong as I knew it couldn't be right. Thanks to both of you.
Ok. Thanks for the quick response! :)
Hello. I apologize if this is a common issue, but I don't know much about it. Occasionally, like when we're playing games on the computer or running multiple programs or something, a pop-up from norton comes up that says "High CPU usage from (Insert program name here)". How serious is it and what could I do to prevent it from happening? Thanks!
