How agressive are Nortons parental controls?

Moved to Online.Family Norton Board for better exposure.

breetai,

The best advice I can give is to give the product a try yourself. The control you have over internet content can be as aggressive as you want, from only allowing sites through the whitelist or by blocking by category.

Matt

Hi Matt,

I have Norton Add-On Pack for Parental Control reasons.

My current issues with this product are as follows:

1)  Porn sites are not consistently blocked with Sex/Acts, Sex/Personals, etc., category is checked to be blocked. Why is this?

2)  Some of the porn sites I added to Additional Sites to block are not being blocked. Why is this?

3)  When the category in above-noted 1) is checked to block porn sites and not on my list of blocked sites on 2), why does Norton Add-on Pack allow porn sites through?

4)  What are the White List that are added to NIS 2009 LiveUpdates? Are these the safe sites that I indicated in another forum? These sites was categorized by Norton Add-On Pack as being Sex/Acts or Sex/Personals when, in fact, it is Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. I do want IE6 blocked, but not IE7, which I currently reinstalled on my computer.

5)  Why can't Norton Add-On Pack Parental Control block porn sites when InPrivate Browsing is activated in IE8? I tested it. It blocked some of the sites that I included on my Blocked List. I have uninstalled IE8 for this reason. But that beast seems to have remnant programs still on my computer.

6)  I have two Limited Accounts: one for myself and my brother and his teenage and five year old sons. Some how through my brother's account, he is able to delete his Parental Control History. Can you block Limited Accounts from even looking at Parental Control History?

To resolve IE8 access issues, I disabled IE7 access, but that beast is still being accessed by Norton Support Loader through One Click Support. I am feeling more inclined to uninstall IE7, Norton Add-On Pack Parental Control period.

I look forward to your response. Thanks so much for your time.

This forum is about OnlineFamily.Norton and not the Norton Add-On-Pack. My first suggestion is to give OnlineFamily.Norton a try.

However here is some answers to your questions:

1) since AOP is using a static list of urls to determine site categories, as new porn sites are developed, they would have to be added to the list and live updated, this process can take some time

2) I am unsure why this would happen, perhaps you are not adding them properly to the blacklist

3) same answer as number 1

4) I do not follow this question, you are talking about white listing sites and then changed to the version of Internet Explorer.

5) IE8 may be preventing the software from seeing the urls to block them

6) you need the password to see any of the parental control history, it is not based on the account, but if they have the password to get to the parental control settings

Hope this helps, however I strongly encourage you to try OnlineFamily.Norton, see if it does what you expect.

Hi Matt,

I should have made question 4 separate. Just sick and tired of having to come to this forum for help when all I want to do is surf and talk with my friends.

2)  Adding list of additional sites to be blocked is pretty self-explanatory. So I click on the Add button and add the sites that show up in my brother's Parental Control History: porn sites.

4)  What are the White List that are added to NIS 2009 LiveUpdates? Are these the safe sites that I indicated in another forum? That is, Internet Explorer with the "IE" in its address path: microsoft\windows\ie\.

For some reason Norton Add-On Pack was identifying Microsoft's IE6 website as being categorized as being Sex/Acts or Sex/Personals when, in fact, it is Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 website. I really don't care for IE6 and later versions, but when I need information on IE I could not access any IE website!

5)   Then why would it block some sites and let other sites through in both Normal and InPrivate Browsing Mode? Norton is obviously automatically detecting these sites based on selected Category sites to block and Additional Sites to Block List.

6)    I was in my Limited Account and I was able to see Parental Control and the Delete History button displayed. I guess since I posted earlier about this it no longer displays.

I am reluctant to try Norton.OnlineFamily.Norton because I see some posts on this forum that some teenagers have been able to get around the Limited Time option parents enabled as well as logging activities are not showing at all or they are delayed. Major concerns for me. How about utilizing a countdown timer associated with each Username like some internet cafes employ?

Thanks so much for your information.

Hi,

Let me try to answer you questions and work with you to resolve the issue.....

1.  There are multiple reasons that it does not block the porn sites. It might be that the URL does not contain thiswebsite in its porn list or the engine somehow misses this. Can you send me the few of the porn sites that are not getting blocked? Will be very useful for us to get the same condition as yours.

2. Please send us the list of URLs that you added to the Additional Sites to Block. We will try to test it once here.

3. The product works this way. When you browse the URL is taken for anlysis and checked agains the URL list. This will return what type of website it is.If the type matches the one that you have checked(in your case Sex/Acts, Sex/Personal) the site will be blocked. If not , we then check whether this URL is intentionally blocked by you by adding it in " Additional Sites to block" list.If yes, then the website will be blocked. If both these cases fail, we then allow the website.

4. White List that are added to NIS 2009ate not related to the Parental Control at all.The only thing the Add-On Pack gets from live update is the "URLList updates", which would contain the categories(Sex/Persoanls,Drungs,Violence, etc) for many known URLs.

5. Add-on Pack is not dependent on any browser. It will work the same way with any browse.I do not see a reason why it does not work on IE8. I tested it with both IE7 and IE8(in private and normal mode), it worked fine for me.Please let us know the URLs for which it did not work we will get it added to the URLList.

6. Does your brother know the Parental Control password? It is not possible to delete the entries without knowing the parental control password.

Would appreciate if you can post to NIS forum rather than here when you have issues with add-on Pack.

Thanks for taking time and reporting the issues here..

Senthil

Just a clarification, please send the URL list to Senthil using a private message. These URLs should not be posted on the forum ;-)

Thanks!

Hello,
I  have been dissapointed  with the Norton Parental Control for many years now.

I have selected 'block all sex sites' in my parental control settings. This does not block many  sex sites...

What is the point of having parental control to block sex sites when it doesn't do it anyway ? It is impossibility to add every address individually on the blocked addresses list. My son will always find new ones by just googling. Even the google search sex images don't get blocked.

Hi outim,

Apart from the Parental Controls in the Add-On Pack, we recently launched a new service at onlinefamily.norton.com. Check it out. It's very easy to use and is currently offered for free.

I ask because we discovered my 15 year old son had happened upon a link to offensive content on a specific website.   Our parental controls had not blocked it because it's primarily a music site.  so I started researching.  I installed this program yesterday and it seems okay so far but I want to prevent another such incident.  Does Norton have a feature like I Shield?  I Shield uses a complex algorithm involving skin tones, textures, limb positions and other features to identify illicit images on Web pages. It also watches the computer screen to detect inappropriate images displayed in any program at all.   If not, can I install I Shield as well and will it work in sync with Norton?

P.S. You might want to put [Removed website] in the category of offensive content because it allows such easy access to some incredibly lurid videos.

Hi crfuller,

OnlineFamily.Norton gives you the ability to block specific categories of Web sites as well specific Web sites on your child’s computer, so your child does not have access to content that might be inappropriate.

We recommend that you shouldn’t have other parental control programs installed on your child’s PC when you use OnlineFamily.Norton for best results.

If you feel that the categorization of a particular Web site that your child has visited is not correct, you can dispute it.  For details, please check the link below.

Thanks,

Katie

It seems that Norton’s approach is to let the kid find the sex page once, make the parent add it and then problem solved.  NO, the problem is we don’t want our kids finding the porn in the first place!   I’ll probably give Norton a try for awhile, but I strongly encourage that Norton consider taking an approach to content review similar to I Shield.

The site you mentioned is listed as a file sharing site. As with many file sharing sites, it may have links to inappropriate sites, or have inappropriate files on it. If the child had tried to visit those links, they would have been blocked. I would recommend you block file sharing sites, but as mentioned if you think a site deserves an additional classification please send it in.
