How Can I Download an Executable File

I have had a number of attempts to download executable files from a link within the Winsoft Forum. The file downloads but then my Norton 360 5.0 analizes the file, considers it could be harmful and whilst one appears to be given a choice still to SAVE the file, this does not happen and the downloaded file is deleted and so far I have been unable to restore.

I have a program for audio visuals, Pictures2Exe that on completion of your project, you produce an exe file and I want to see what other Users have done. I recall that something similar happened a year or two back but then, after the warning appeared, one could right click and still save the file. Other than turning off my Anti Virus protection when downloading, is there any other way one can still download but then manage to over-ride the warning and save the exe file for later viewing?

Since you know the name of the .exe file that is being deleted, you can add it to auto-protect and Sonar exclusions.  That may stop Norton from reacting to it depending on what is removing it.  If it is being quarantined, you should be able to go to History>quarantine and submit the file to Symantec to check it and/or restore it from quarantine.  If so, there may be a way to set it to ignore the file.

Sorry. Can you please point me in the direction to be able to locate the areas suggested?

a) Add to auto-protect & Sonar exclusions.

b) History > Quarantine

Hi Xenofex2,

When downloading these files, turn off Download Intelligence in the Norton Web Settings.  The fact that little is known about these files is what is causing the reputation-based component to block them.

Thanks for that. However not sure if, or what, difference there is between Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security, but in Norton 360, which I have, this ability to turn off Download Intelligence in Norton Web Settings does not appear to be there.

I have gone into Settings, and the two most likely areas I thought in which I could locate Download Intelligence were 1) Anti Virus, and 2) Administrative Settings. (Other Areas were Firewall, Anti Spam, My Network, Parental Controls, Identity Protection, Task Scheduling, and Backup Settings.) NB - WEB is not mentioned.

I guess it could have been renamed in Norton 360? Now I don't pretend to understand the jargon, but I have seen the word SONAR used although not sure if that is relevant and what Sonar actually does. However just in case, within my Anti Virus settings, Sonar Protection is ON, Sonar Advanced Mode is in AUTOMATIC, Remove risks Automatically is OFF, Remove risks if I am away is ON, and the last one, Show Sonar Block Notification is SHOW ALL.

So is Web Settings>Download Intelligence in Norton 360 and can you help me locate please, or is it hiding under a different name?

Hi Xenofex2,

I'm no expert in this area but I do have Norton 360.  Have you tried : Settings : Antivirus : Sonar Protection - Off.

I think that might do it but even if it does I would recommend putting Sonar back on afterwards.

Others better informed may give different advice.

Good luck.

Hi Xenofex2,

See if this helps you locate what you are looking for:

From Main page - Settings > Antivirus > Scans & Risks Tab > Scroll down to the bottom > Items to Exclude from Auto-Protect and Sonar Detection > Configure and also at the very bottom Insight Protection

To see Quarantine:
Tasks > Check Security History > Clcik on the down arrow behind Recent History > Quarantine should be the 6th bolded item in the drop down.

Download Intelligence should be in the Internet Settings in Norton 360, unless it has been changed in v5.

To get to Download Intelligence setting:

Settings > Firewall > Intrusion and Browser Protection Tab > Download Intelligence

Thanks for the suggestions. At the moment I am not sure what the key action actually was, more likely a combination of them all and whilst I did initially turn off Sonar and again downloaded the exe link, the file was still deleted, but, with the other suggestions, this time, found it in Quarantine and have since restored it to view.

Many thanks to you all for your help and advice and have printed out this subject question and answers to keep for future reference.
