How can I exclude USB devices from being scanned on my Windows 7 computer?

I began using an external hard drive to utilize Carbonite mirror image.   Apparently, my Norton is constantly monitoring the external hard drive slowing down my system and causing other pains.  The only way to safely disconnect the external hard drive is by completely disabling my Norton.
