How can I install now - but activate 60 day period later?

How can I install a 60 day version of internet security but acitvate the 60 day 'trial' period manually at a later time manually? instead of starting it immediately after installing it.

kinda like the preinstalled versions that come with ready built machines. the tiral period only starts after you click the "activate now" prompt

I am preparing a pc for my father and want to "preinstall" internet security 2010 for him. (the 60 day demo)

since I do not know when he will lays his hands on the pc for the first time i want it to install so that he can "activate" the 60 day period manually when he starts workign with the new pc.

is there a install option,  like setup -x  or some other possibility to accomplish this?

thank you

Janine.

I've never heard of a method to install the files but delay the activation so the countdown does not start .... which is not to say there is not a way of doing it .... Hang on and see what comes up.

It may help to know what country you are located in since I've not heard of a downloadable 60 day trial version in the USA/CAN except preinstalled on OEM machines when there seems to be a wide range of possibilities up even to 15 months with HP I think it is (of course there are no free lunches so I guess it is costed in somewhere!)

I take it he is not close enough for you to visit.

If it is the NIS 2010 the only thing I could think of would be for the installation file to be placed on the desktop so that it created an icon and then you tell him to doubleclick on that icon and it would start the installation. With 2010 it is quick and unfrightening; if you have not done it yourself try it with the 30 day free trial you can download from CNET Downloads -- here's my boilerplate on that:

We found recently that you can download the 30 trial versions from CNET without any formality like giveing Norton your Credit Card details and having to cancel during the trial to avoid being charged; you just have to fill your email address.

And in case you are worried when you click on Download it takes you to a Norton download site, not to a third party site.

Norton Internet Security 2010

Norton AntiVirus 2010

Norton 360

Can you just save it to the desktop and open when needed...such as when you give it to father?

thank you...    but that didn't  really solve it ; )

i am from germany.     of course i could place the installer on the desktop. but i'd prefer the more beautiful solution. i am sure it's got to be possible somehow.... probably a simple installer switch or a registry setting.

so if anyone knows... : )

Hi JanineM,

It is not possible with the retail version of NIS 2010. It is available only for OEM versions which you get through Authorized Symantec partners. I would suggest you to keep the installer in the desktop and inform your dad to install NIS 2010 immediately after booting up the computer for the first time. The new Norton installer is faster and won't take more than a minute to complete the installation.

huwyngr:  btw....   now that I took a closer look at the link that you provided i am not so sure anymore about the one that i found previously.

not 100% sure, but after googling a bit I think i got it from here: http://www.download3k.com/Install-Norton-Internet-Security.html  it says in the title 60 day trial.  maybe some expert can take a look at it. hope it's nothing bad ; )

Thank you Yogesh....   are you sure about that?    that's what I thought too.. BUT I have NIS 2009 on my own HP oem machine. it has a recover partition with all the installed software installers on it. So I tested the setup and there was absolutely no difference! it immediately activated the trial period....    this is why i thought there is not a special installer but a special way to install it.

Do you know anything more about it? what must be done different to make it NOT start immediately.

thank you

I'm glad I said that didn't mean there is not ....

I'm downloading it now after the Norton SafeWeb gave the site a green tick ....

I see it comes from digital river who run the Norton Store so I think you can consider it safe but don't hold me on that. Download finished and Norton says it is OK although not in use by many people. Malwarebytes is OK with it too.

Will your father be OK using an English language version? If not check out the Norton de website.

i think it's an international version. it installs in german language on my machine!

btw: checking the german norotn site was the first thing that i did.     they also only give a link to the demo after they have the credit card info....     i also tried to call them....  but phonesupport seems not to be available. just an automation with two different answers.

hey, but i still got the feeling that the question is not 100% answered ; )

at this moment the way how i will do it on my fathers machine is not so important anymore. one way or the other i will do it... and i still got plenty of time do decide.

i am really curious and just ran the installer from the 2009 hp version. and just like i guessed....  it also activated immediately.  so it doesn't seem to be the installer itself.

come on... : )   someone's got to know the secret    : )

janine,

If anyone told you the secret you know what they'd have to do ..... <g>

If it is something specific to OEMs then I doubt anyone would be happy to make it more widespread.

Here's a thought for another workaround -- as suggested put the installation file on the machine in an accessible place (I have a folder on all my machines that is C:\Install from  and also set up the machine for Remote Control/Access which I think is built into certain versions of Windows 7 (is that what he will have?) or for which there is at least on secure and well thought of application -- then after you "deliver" the machine you can access the machine from your home and install the application.

Could save you a lot of traveling etc in troubleshooting later ....

Good luck!

Hello JanineM

Look into a program called TeamViewer. You and your father can access each other's computer with permission from each of you.
