How can I keep the same key when renewing NIS?

When I renew my NIS11 subscription next month I would like to keep the same key.  If I renew by selecting 'Renew' on the bottom of the NIS11 home screen wll I keep the same key or be assigned a new one?

Hi car825

If you use "renew" then it will keep the existing key.

Just to be crystal clear -- if you click on Renew AND buy the renewal from Norton on line it will keep the same KEY.

Is there a special reason you care about what the KEY is since you can often save a lot of money by buying a retail copy at a discount from an authorized distributor and using that KEY as the subscription is about to expire -- it wipes out unexpired time when you do it that way, unlike a real RENEW which adds the time automatically.

If it's because you have several computers activated under the one subscription that may not matter.

Leet us know and give us more details if you want to.

The reason I want to keep the same key is that I want to be able to restore my laptop to a point in time before I renewed and not have to deal with NIS being expired because the system image has the old key.  Is there a way around that if you get a new key?

Hello car825

Usually when you use the restore function, it ends up breaking your Norton product and you usually have to reinstall the product any way. When you reinstall it, then all you have to is enter the current key you are using and it will synch up to the proper time left on your subscription..

Interesting thought -- to which I don't know the answer. You may have to balance the cost savings against the convenience.

Hopefully you don't have to restore too often -- note that if you mean running Windows System Restore that it can break security programs, including but not exclusively Norton, because their database of system files no longer matches the dates of the mix of old and new files after the restore .....

And the normal solution is to uninstall the security program, clean up with its special tool and reinstall it. .....

So you may not have a choice.

Hi car825,

Are you referring to using Windows System restore or restoring from an image backup such as from Norton Ghost?

If the latter, then NIS would continue to work fine albeit that if you restored to an earlier time with a former product key the worst you would have to do is re-enter the current product key and/or click on Support > Subscription status to resync with the Symantec server.

Best wishes.

I'm not referring to Windows System Restore.  I use the Windows 7 Backup and Restore function to make a full System Image on an external hard drive every couple of weeks.  It works great.  I can restore my entire system in about 30 minutes.  I didn't want to have to deal with an expired key as part of the process, even if it costs me a bit more to renew online.

Hi car825,

Thanks for the clarification. It is of course your choice and as others have stated you can renew through the program and keep the same product key. :smileywink:

Best wishes.
