How can I restore files from an XP machine to a Windows 7 machine via Norton Ghost 15?

On booting up my 5-year-old PC  a couple of days ago, ChkDsk kicked in, giving me a message about the file system being ntsf, etc. Then it said unless I stopped it ("Y/N"), it was going to delete erroneous file segments (I don't remember the exact words). I thought, "Okay. ChkDsk found a problem and wants to fixt it." So I didn't press "N" for no.

ChkDsk then began deleting file segments. It went on and on. Ten or 15 minutes later it was still going. Finally, some 80,000 deletions later, I gave up and manually shut the machine down. And naturally, when I tried to reboot, the machine would not come up.

Fortunately, I thought, I've been backing up with Norton Ghost twice weekly and have two recent back-ups on two different separate hard drives -- one internal, and one external. And, because of limitations on that that particular machine, I had already begun transitioning to a new, 64-bit machine.

However, I have never before had to restore files out of Norton Ghost. And this new installation of Ghost on the Dell is now just a "trial" version, since the invoice with the ownership key on it is one of the files that I need to restore.

Is there a way that I can use this new, temporary installation of Ghost on the Dell to go into my external hard drive and locate the particular files I'm looking for? Or can one only restore complete "images"?

Right now I'm clearly out of my depth. I would welcome expert advice very much. Perhaps someone could offer a step-by-step list?

Thanks,
