How do I configure NIS2009 to not take any actions when malware is found?

I want NIS to notify me anytime any threat is found instead of taking action on its own. I couldn't find any options to configure this.  I did a full system scan and after it was done it automatically quarantined some files, many of which were not virus/malware but legitimate networking tools (CainAbel, Brutus).  The layout of the screen and options was confusing.  It was a pain just finding out the name of the files that were quarantined. I had to open 2 or 3 windows.  Some of the files had the option to Restore and Exclude while others only had the option to Restore strangely.  When I clicked Restore it popped up a window asking me where I wanted to restore it which I thought was unnecessary.  Why don't you just restore it to where you previously found it instead of clicking through all those folder paths?  Since I forgot the path to where it originally was and I already clicked the Restore button I just decided to restore it to the Desktop.  When I did that the Auto-protect immediately detected it and re-quarantined it!  I had to disable Auto-protect to stop it from doing that.

Also, a few files were not automatically quarantined and NIS asked me how I wanted to resolve them.  But some of these files only had one option to resolve them (Delete) while others had Fix, Ignore, etc.  I didn't want to delete some of the files but there was no other option to pick.

Basically I'm finding NIS to not be very user-friendly and the gui and layout is tedious to navigate.  If I could have complete control of what happens to the files I could overlook some of these issues.  Is there a way to do this?   I'm using Winxp and NIS2009 16.5.

I don’t know why Norton won’t allow options for advanced users to use this program.  They could have made the automatic removal a default option but allow it to be configurable.  I don’t want to have to be constantly checking and excluding programs.  It’s too bad because I liked the speed of this AV.  And most reviews have been very positive.  But I want full control of what goes on in my computer.  So I guess I will look for another AV to use.  Thanks for the help.

I agree with you on this -- I found it extremely annoying to have to find out where it came from in order to get it back.

I have Jellybean as part of UBCD boot disk file I think it was and it annoyed me to have that removed without asking.

Would going into internet settings>Advanced firewall-configure> change automatic program control to off and changing Advanced monitoring to on ,give you a bit of control over whats going in and out of your pc and if NIS finds something it will ask you first.

That’s only for internet related stuff though.  If I did a system scan it would still automatically try to quarantine and delete stuff.  If the AV engine was 100% accurate I wouldn’t have a problem with that but there is no such thing as a perfect AV.  It took me a lot more time searching for the files and restoring and excluding them than it would have if it just asked me what I wanted to do with the files.  I hope the Norton developers can update their program to give advanced users more control.

Does anyone know if Norton Anti-virus 2009 does the same thing?

Norton AntiVirus and Internet Security by design appear to be meant for advanced user. They don't come with usually set it and forget it options as you can find it in other products like Norton 360.

However, these products will not give an option to configure it to act according to your choice when a medium/high risk security event is detected. The first level of action is to quarantine it and not to delete them. I'm sure NAV 2009 does the same thing as well.

Just want to point you to the suggestion box thread, in case you want to post your suggestion.
