I was having a problem with my Carbonite backup software connecting to its online server after reinstalling it. I went through all the Program Rules to allow the necessary services but it still wouldn't connect. Hence, I tried to make sense of the traffic rules and decide which ones were ok to block and which to allow. It's like reading Greek! There doesn't seem to be any simple explanation of what protocols one should use, so I put a monitor on all the ones I wasn't sure of.
I got the Carbonite to connect, so obviously one of the rules was the right one, however now I'm getting umpteen monitor rule messages for every process on the computer.
Can someone please give me a suggestion on how to ensure my software connects but I don't get a million monitor messages? If I knew which protocol to allow, I could possibly restore the blocks to the other originally blocked protocols, but I'm not sure which one did the trick.

Thanks for the reply. I did check on the Norton 360 Automatic Program Control and it was already on, yet Carbonite was still not working. I went through all the Traffic Rules I had put a Monitor on and blocked them and then my Gmail notifier and Carbonite stopped working. I then tried restoring all the default settings and neither Carbonite nor the Gmail notiifier would work so I went back to almost all the blocked traffic rules and set them to Allow. Now the Gmail notifier is workinng but Carbonite still says it's waiting for an internet connection. (update: I just checked and now it says it's searching for files to back up so maybe it takes a little longer.)
Bottom line seems to be that the Automatic Program Control isn't working like it's supposed to. I did make changes to some files as you recommended but that didn't seem to work, or maybe I didn't give it enough time for Carbonite to pick on it, or something.
I'll try again later and see what I can get to work. I don't know what the impact of putting all the traffic rules to Allow is, but at least I'm not getting all the monitor messages and my programs seem to be working now. Not ideal but functioning...
