I have recently installed NIS2013 on a PC running Windows 8 Pro RTM.
I am now getting a warning that I need to run a scan (i.e. it is overdue). I have tried to run a manual quick scan but when I click on that nothing happens. Similarly nothing happens when I click on 'Full scan'
I am not sure if there is a problem with the NIS installation and I perhaps should re-install. I had previously set up a custom scan whereby a data-only drive was excluded from the scan ( I did this as I personally prefer to just scan the Windows drive and to scan the very large data drive seperately). I am wondering whether, by setting up a custom scan, I have effectively disabled the ability to run any other scan manually? I can run the custom (full) scan and I see that there is an option to set up a custom quick scan but only on a schedule. I have now sceduled it but would still like to be able to run a quick scan manually. It would seem odd that by creating a custom scan I have effectively disabled the quick scan from running at all.
Is there a problem or is this just a rather odd approach in NIS 2013 GUI?
As an aside, as someone who skipped NIS 2012, I am generally happier with 2013. It runs well on Windows 8 in terms of performance. I did try the updated 2012 when it was announced to be Windows 8 compatible but found it had a horrendous impact on performance which seems to have been resolved with the new release.

I had the exact same thing today... I'm using Windows 8 Pro x64 RTM with a retail key and I installed NIS2013 2 weeks ago...
The things you described happened to me too... it's strange!
I could not click on anything in my NIS2013 UI so I decided to uninstall NIS2013 and after that use CCleaner and I re-installed NIS2013 NL again,...
Hope I'm not getting this strange bug again; is it a bug ?!
I think I have narrowed down the cause of the problem. I found that by re-starting the PC ( as opposed to shutting it down and then booting up again) the problem went away.
I'm guessing that it is related to the new way in which Windows 8 shuts down and boots. I think that when you click shut down now Windows 8 writes a lot of files to the hard drive (kind of similar to hybernation in previous versions). That's partly how Microsoft have achieved such an amazing improvement in boot time. When you click Restart however it shuts down 'fully' and then re-boots. This is still required to install updates to Windows 8.
I found that after shutting down the PC and booting up again several times in the course of the day, the problem with NIS returned, (I am currently evaluating Windows 8 for my company on a PC with an SSD for speed, boot time and power consumption and am deliberately turning it off and on rather than leaving it running - it is pretty amazing in all 3 regards, btw) . Again, I could solve the problem by re-starting.
It seems likely then that NIS is not playing nicely with the revised shutdown regime in Win 8 and needs to be 'restarted' now and again.
It happened again.. so I uninstalled NIS2013 and installed NIS2012 again..
NIS2013 FAILS!
Yes, I have uninstalled it now. The problem just keeps occurring and I have noticed that File Insight is not working either. I'm dubious as to whether I am actually getting any protection at all...not sure how to verify whether any real time protection is working but if scans cannot be run manually or on a schedule and there is no file insight, without repeatedly restarting your system then the product seems pretty useless.
