How do I stop smart firewall blocking a program?

I recently bought a Netgear R6300 router and have plugged my printer into its' usb port to use across the network.  The Netgear program used to detect the printer is getting blocked on my mifes Microsoft Vista laptop.   I run the program and it won't detect the printer.  As soon as I disable smart firewall  the printer can be detected.

Everything works OK on both mine and my sons laptops.   I've copied all the settings for the netgear program I can find in Norton on my laptop to my wifes Norton, but it's not made a difference.

So how can I stop NIS smart firewall from blocking her laptop detecting the printer.   The Netgear program is called control centre.exe

Hi cdb,

Check the Norton Network Security Map and make sure that the printer is shown as a network device and that the trust level for the network is "Shared."

It's not showing via norton or via the router attacthed devices page, but it's definately there.

I think I need to set up some sort of exception on the firewall for control centre.exe, but I don't know how.

What trust level is shown for the network in the Network Security Map?  It needs to be "Shared."

The network is showing as shared.

It is odd that msiexec.exe would be involved, as that is just the installer for the software.  Have you checked the system requirements to make sure the program is compatible with the operating system you are installing on?

Also, open the Norton Firewall Program Control panel and see if the printer control center program is listed.  If it is, highlight the entry and remove it.  When you next try to connect with the printer, the firewall will create new rules for the program and things might get working again.  If the printer program is not listed in Program Control, then the issue is something other than a firewall problem.

The program works perfectly when Norton smart firewall is off, so I guess it's compatable.

I've removed the program from the program control centre twice and it hasn't changed anything.

Does the PC see other devices on the network - everything except the printer?  You might want to purge the Network Security Map and let Norton reestablish the devices on the network.  Read the full introductory instructions, as well as the specific purge steps here:

It doesn't see the printer. I've purged the network, put the program on full trust, neither has worked.

How can I check in Norton if it's blocking the printer's port either inbound or outbound?

(my laptop doesn't show the printer on Nortons' map either, but it works OK on mine)

The user manual states that some firewalls need to be disabled in order to print.  But before admitting defeat, check a couple of things first:  Make sure the Control Center utility is running in Task Manager.  Also change the access permission in Norton Firewall Program Control from "Auto" to "Allow."
