Hi blackclouds,
The Idle TIme Quick Scans cannot be turned off. The procedure outlined by RichD only pertains to Idle Time Full System Scans. Quick Scans are a high priority because they look for malware that may have evaded detection prior to the latest virus definitions update. Because they are important and of short duration, there was no provision made to disable them. It has been noted that the Quick Scans in Norton 2012 are somewhat more disruptive and lengthy than the scans in earlier versions and that this is an issue for some users.
Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I can put up with the noise with a white noise machine switched on. Either that or swap out the seagate barricuda for my trusty samsung f3 that is much quieter.
Either way, I'm a norton subscriber for life, I'm very impressed with it and especially safe search that I can't live without.
Hi blackclouds,
Silent Mode may be of use to you here. It will suspend the Idle Quick Scan for the duration chosen but it will also suppress all Norton alerts and suspend all other Norton background activities. A list of background activities can be found here.
This article explains methods of turning on and turning off Silent Mode manually. The last method is the quickest.

Go green and save electricity - turn the system off while you are sleeping!
