On occasion I have been frustrated by this quick links happening when I have been typing it seems to be connected to the ’ or " key. Because when I try to type don’t, won’t, it’s or any word with " ’ in it, a little box appears on the left hand side of the reply screen trying to 2nd guess my typing at least that what it looks like. I have no idea how it appears or goes away.Any help??
I don't know Allen, another aspect was when I hit the enter key, Instead of it dropping to the next line it took me out of the reply area to the original message to which I was replying to?
I use FF3.08 but this did happen with the other versions.I don't really know how to configure FF I just use what arrived?
I have adobe acrobat plug in, Mozilla default plug in,2 javas, quicktime and a shockwave flash, plus some that are disabled. To be honest I had not noticed the acrobat plug in before?
Thanks for your help.
The quick links( I may have got the wrong name but I'm sure it's quick something) appears as another bar above the taskbar.
Sounds like a loss of focus from inside the reply frame.
The reply editor has a mind of its own .... unfortunately 8:(
Hey Mo,
I have experienced something similar but only a couple of times. I thought that perhaps I had hit some keyboard combo. by accident. The apostrophe key was not the only one to bring up the same pop up box. I forget what the other key or keys made it pop up.
I also forget how we got around it without losing our written text. It was either simply reloading the page or shutting down and reopening the browser which was also FF 3.0...7 or .8. If you do reload the page or browser just ctrl-a, ctrl-c to copy select all the text and to copy to the clipboard and then paste it back (ctrl-v). Should you wish to reboot your system just copy everything you have written in a post and save it in something like notepad.
Take care,
Mumford68

It happens very rarely but it is a pain when it does.I usually just persevere and not use the apostrophe! Next time it happens I will get the screenshot.
Hi Allen this is the error quick find in the bottom left corner,Trying to reply in this thread and when I tried using the " ' then hit backspace it kept kicking me back to the original post I was replying to.
Hope this can help you find the error?
Hi Mo,
That quickfind box at the bottom of your browser isn't a forum function, and AFAIK it is not a stock Firefox feature either. I suspect you have a firefox add-on that makes hot key available to you.
Hope that helps.
How do I work out how to get rid of it?? It happened in the last version of FF and
this is all I have in Add-ons.Thanks
I just google searched and found that this is a feature of Firefox. You might want to read http://foliovision.com/2007/11/06/firefox-quickfind/ it seem's to deal with the problem.
I use Firefox all day everyday and had never run into this feature. I'm not sure why you can't type the key in your editor window tho. In my case I only see the quickfind box if I hit the ' key when the editor windowis not open.
Thank you so much Allen, I have read the article in the link and I can not find the 2) Option which is to set searchkeys.disable.all to TRUE
I don't have that option in the list provided once you follow the steps about:config ? Do you have this in yours??
Thanks for your time on this.
Sorry I don't know much more. Maybe someone else will and can jump in. If you read thru some of the comments after the article it says that you have to add that key.
I presume that resizing the window didn't work for you? That was the first suggested fix.
Thanks I did not read the comments!
I was going for total removal so that's why I went to option 2 first.as it does not happen all the time but sporadically I have not had the chance to try option 1.
Mind you I'm unsure what resizing the window means other than minimizing it??
Howdy Allen,
I would like to thank you for researching this and for finding this information. I had been using the same search engine around the same time you had put forth your posting and although I had seen posts that showed this issue goes back to the year 2004 and was showing up in versions of FF 1.x I was not able in the first half hour find the information that you had tracked down which was not only helpful but I believe was even outside of what you are required to do as far as moderating and perahps even researching forum or Norton products items.
You either did a good amount of research, are a master of entering keywords into SE's or I need to meet you in Vegas since you are a luck person. One or all of those :)
Thx again,
Mumford68
Hey Mo,
Sorry, I have not had this happen to me for a while now. So it's a little hard to comment or experiment. I would have to assume that they are speaking of having the active window smaller than the maximum size (although the screen can really get maximized by the F11 key, hitting F11 again will return to the normal, full screen size :)).
When the window is not in "Maximize", indicated by the middle button in the top right corner of the browser (in between 'Minize' and 'Close'). When hovering the cursor over the middle button if it indicates 'Restore Down' then the screen is maximized and hitting Restore down will then allow the screen to be re-sized. The border of the window can then be grabbed and dragged to make the current window different dimensions. By by grabing the left or right sides, top, bottom or any of the four corners.
Thank you again for bringing this up as I had originally thought it was something I had just kept doing by accidentaly hitting something on the keyboard!
Take care,
Mumford68
So mumford68
Your errors are the same with the apostrophe? Did you manage to do the 2nd option from Allen's link?
And yes I believe it was above and beyond what I would expect So Symantec head honchos take note ...Allen does a great job in monitoring this forum feedback section. Issues are addressed quickly with great humor and insight and in this case outside the boundries (much appreciated the extra mile you went)
Not as yet mo, Yea, I've had it happen a few times but it has been an uncommon occurance and has been hiding out as of late. I thought perhaps future FF builds might weed this out although it has apparently survived 3 generations of the browser thus far.
I failed to mention (i'm not sure if the link that Allen_K directs to addressed it) is that not only the (') can bring up the quick link window but so can the (/). Apparently the apostrophe key is supposed to search for URL's whereas the slash key does a more general search.
Atleast with each and every issue we are presented with an opportunity to learn something.
All the best,
Mumford68
I just tried something as I read your post and hit the ' key and guess what popped up! So it can happen for me even out of the PM/Reply area. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing !
Thanks for your post ,and yes there is always an opportunity to learn.
No you did not misunderstand you are spot on,I did not realise it's Firefox and not this forum
In Firefox it is meant to bring up the Quick Links box (kind of like hitting Ctrl-F) for finding stuff on a page. It is just strange behaviour (apparently) for it to popup when in an editor.
Hope I didn't misunderstand.
Laters,

Thats the way it is supposed to work. Those search boxes should popup when you are NOT typing in an editor window, but when you ARE typing in an editor window or text box the key should work normally and present the typed character.
I don't know, but I can guess that there MAY BE a browser add-on that is causing conflicts.
