I had read that blog but it does not tell me how to use the actual feature on NIS2009?I know what its doing/does.but I want to know how to actually use it.
Cheers Mo
Hi Mo
I'm With You!
I'd really like to know what I'm actually supposed to be doing ( How To Use ) - Norton Insight
So Far... I've only ever looked at once
I'm scared I'll break something If I mess with it
There is nothing to break. If you simply open up InSight it tells you what it does on the top left. This is from the help file. InSiught has nothing to do with full scans.InSight is scanning your running processes for known good ones.
Norton Insight allows smart scanning of files on your computer. It improves the performance of Norton Internet Security scan by scanning fewer files without compromising the security of your computer.
Norton Insight provides information about the processes that are running on your computer. You can view the details of the files of each running process, assess the trust level, and take necessary action. You can refresh a file to obtain the current trust level.
You must be connected to the Internet to view the trust level of running processes on your computer.
I looked at file that was Symantec trusted, I clicked on the icon on the right (the little square box) which pops up a dialogue box. I clicked on the link by mistake that says “check trust now” it’s now not listed as trusted. How do I get it back to trusted? Clicking on the link again doesn’t do anything. It says Trust Level-not trusted.
Hi Again Dieselman743
To a Novice PC user "Take necessary action" does not mean much. What I'm looking for is someone to say you click this this happens or it means this ie I click on the file that has no trust,it takes me to a window with folders???What as a novice does that mean I have to do next? Thanks for your patience.
Cheers Mo
Hi Mo
I'll 2nd That!
What Symantec needs to do...
Is have an... Online - User Guide
Like PC Tools and SUPERAntiSpyware has
Norton Internet Security 2009 User Guide: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/productdetail/manuals_ocs.jsp?product=nis&version=2009&ocstype=
There is a user guide. Just click help under any tab or click help & support on the main GUI. You do not needed to do anything with InSight. Just open it up and let it do its job then close it out. This is all I do. Insight is check your running processes and comparing them to Norton’s database for known trusted processes. It has nothing to do with programs or files on your pc. The data base is updated daily so about once a week or so run InSight. If your pc is clean then everything on your pc should be trusted. If its unknown to Norton then all that means is that the processes is not in there data base yet. Everybody’s pc is different and we all have different running processes.
How does a file become Community Trusted and whats the difference between that and Norton Trusted?
This has nothing to do with FILES. Its only your running processes. Simply hold your mouse over the “i” next to trust level and you will see an well detailed explanation. Norton does a great job explaining every last little detail and also provides a help link in each tab.
Thanks Dieselman743
That makes more sense. Now what do you do with files that can't be found on your computer?example I have onetouch.exe (I think this is my touch pad on my laptop,it's off as I'm using a mouse)It has no signature no trust but 3 stars in this file these Dlls come up no signature no trust Szupfutl.dll
osdutl.dll
rgnmaker.dll
cdromutl.dll
mixerutl.dll
lgkcutl.dll
wnd2file.dll
syntpfcs.dll Microsoft signed but no trust
Nothing comes up in the full system scan.I have said in an earlier post that there is a heap of stuff being submitted/pending in NIS 2009 community watch that's from the last 2 days since I upgraded.what do I do with this info wait and see what community watch does when all the files are processed?I am assuming insight and community watch work together on what is what in my PC.Any thoughts out there on this?
Cheers Mo
Mo InSight has absolutely nothing to do with scanning files. If onetouch.exe is a running process on your pc and always has been then don’t worry about it. Eventually it might be added to the data base. Your confusing things about files and processes. If you bring up your task manager you will see the running processes on your pc that InSight is looking at.
Hi Dieselman743
Yes you are right I have been getting confused with files and processes.I'm not worried as such but just struggling to comprehend whats happening and getting frustrated in my lack of ability to understand!!!I do like the feature.I have not downloaded the pdf norton user book as I'm not sure if my service provider will allow it.
Cheers Mo
Of course you can download the pdf file but why. Simply click on the Help in the main GUI. Here is a great program I want you to use to aid you in whats running on your pc.

What page of the guide can I find this answer? I can't seem to locate anything;
I looked at file that was Symantec trusted, I clicked on the icon on the right (the little square box) which pops up a dialogue box. I clicked on the link by mistake that says "check trust now" it's now not listed as trusted. How do I get it back to trusted? Clicking on the link again doesn't do anything. Your getting confused. Those are not files under InSight. Those are running processes. You didn’t untrust it. I just did the same thing. When you click on a certain running processes that is unknown to Norton and not in the data base you get an option to right click on it and check “trust now”. You didn’t untrust it. All its telling you is that its unknown to Norton. How many stars are by it? Is it community trusted? That’s why you get a pecent ratting. If running processes are unknown then its telling you to run a full scan to be certain there are no viruses.
Thanks Dieselman743 for the explanation and clarification. Do you have any idea why programs such as anything from Apple, AOL or the Symantec program Symnra.exe are “not trusted” yet? Appreciate your feedback.
Once again they are NOT programs. They are running processes. Click on the Help button on the top left of InSight. If a process is not trusted yet all that means is its not in the Norton data base yet. After all NIS just came out last month. In time I am sure it will be.
Updates trust level of the files that are associated with the running processes and also updates coverage percentage value
There may be instances when the trust level of some files has changed or a running process may have terminated. You can refresh the process list to view the current trust level of the files that are associated with the processes that are running on your computer. For example, when you terminate a program, the associated process files are still listed in the details area. The process list is updated only when you refresh the list.
