Running Ghost 15.0.0.35659. Vista Home Premium 64-bit with three multiboot partitions: Main System (Drive C), Beta Test 1 (Drive J), and Beta Test 2 (Drive L). There’s also the standard Dell Recovery partition (Drive I).
What I’m really confused about is “related drives”. When I backup Drive C:, Ghost wants to also backup Drives J:, I:, and L:. Ghost warns me that by not including the related drives, I might not be able to recover all my files.
I’ve spent hours and hours (and much frustration) trying to figure out how Ghost handles “related drives”. (Maybe it’s the way Vista handles “related drives”?)
I’m using Beta Test 1 and Beta Test 2 as clean Vista boots. So, I don’t want to back them up. I’ll install Symantec beta tests on these drives. The only reason I want to back them up (with any Windows updates) is so I can restore a pristine system when a new beta is released.
I tried today to backup Beta Test 2 (clean Vista) after Vista updates, but Ghost wouldn’t allow it because that backup job was being “tracked”, apparently by my backup of “related drives”.
Dell tells me that as long as I have the OS disk, I don’t need the Dell Recovery partition. So I can format that partition and use it for something else or delete it.
When I restore a Beta Test 1 or 2 backup, the hard drive light is solid for several minutes after the reboot. It’s almost as if it is copying a lot of stuff from somewhere.
I’ve searched the Ghost 15 user manual but didn’t really find much help. So I’m looking for someone to answer the following question: What happens if I do not include “related drives” when I backup my Main (production) system?
I’m so confused I really don’t even know if my explanation and question make any sense!
