How is time tracked?

I recently changed the time setting for my son from the one that simply tracks how long the computer is on to the method that only counts "active use". Today it seems he has been online quite a good while longer than the time limit for the day.

Just what is considered "active use"? Mouse movement? Scrolling? Having a web browser or other program open?

What is considered lack of activity, etc.?

One more time related question, is there any way to view how much time has been tracked (rather, actively counted against the time limit) at any given moment?

Thanks!

P.S.

As far as my question about having a way to check time used (or remaining), I meant from a remote source by logging into Norton Family Online from my Netbook for example.

But yes, still curious just how "active use" time is tracked too. :smileyhappy:

Basically, what I'm looking for here is the ability to make a decision as to using a setting for a time limit based on activity or sheer amount of time the computer itself has been activated. I do not know how time is tracked when based on activity - or rather, what is considered "activity" that will advance the time count.

If anyone knows, please let me know at your leisure. Thanks. :smileyhappy:

I am wondering the same thing.  I have posted in several other threads about specific issues we are having and understanding how NOF is "supposed" to work would be useful.

Today for example my oldest daughter has been playing "Fiesta" (an on-line, graphics intensive video game) for at least 3 hours and her daily limit is set to 2 hours so she should have been logged off over an hour ago (not to mention that she used her PC for a good 30+ minutes before going to school today).

To make it more confusing her "available time" was showing something like 14 minutes when she checked first thing today (and she came to us complaining).  I told her to just use the PC until a problem occurred and I would add more hours.  When she checked directly after school (at roughly 3:30 PM) it showed something like 16 minutes remaining.  Now it is 6:20 PM and she is still playing Fiesta.

My youngest daughter on the other hand didn't use her PC until about 5:00 PM today and when she tried it immediately logged her out saying she was out of time.

I tried disabling the daily hour limit at first (on-line from MY PC) and even after rebooting her PC it still kept immediately logging her out.  I then tried changing the settings to allow both daughters to override their limits instead of being logged out and this time after a reboot she was able to dismiss the out of time warning without being logged out.  The older daughter has not seen any time limit messages at all (unless she checks available time at which point she immediately gets logged out - but she can then log back in and keep using the PC).

From what I can tell the curfew portion of NOF is totally messed up - at least on our PCs.  I am wondering if one of the Media Center 3rd party applications (such as My Movies or DVBT) with services and applications that show up in the notification area (bottom right of screen) might be somehow conflicting this how NOF calculates usage hours.  My Movies for example runs a local SQL client that regularly communicates with the SQL server on our primary Media Center PC and I wonder if this could somehow count and confuse the curfew counting NOF software somehow.

Whatever the cause curfew within NOF simply does not work at all with our PCs - yet...

Our children are using older PCs with single core 32-bit processors and XP (Media Center Edition 2005) SP3.  All updates are installed, including all optional update and the latest drivers are installed for all hardware.  Is it possible that NOF doesn't work with MCE2005 as the OS?

Hi celenztah,
