Hi bovtrigger,
Generally I have found the process to be rather quick. I have submitted sites and I believe they have been analyzed and approved within 24 hours.
[Edited due to similar content as in Tim's post.]
Hi, thanks for the fast response,
Yes, I follwed the webmaster section, uploaded the docs tot he sites and verified I was owner
I never went through the re-evaluation as it had not been marked red
Hi,
apologies if I’ve missed something – I’m new to this.
When, as a casual visitor, you click on the grey ‘untested’ icon beside a site in a normal Google search list, a window comes up that says. “Site not tested. It has now been scheduled for testing.”
I had assumed that the site would then be tested (within 2 weeks hopefully). So I listed all my sites in Google and did this (about a dozen, I’m a website designer). I hadn’t registered as the site owner or anything, just acting as a casual visitor.
However, they are all still untested and it’s been about 3 weeks now and my clients are complaining. Hence I’ve found this forum.
Am I right in thinking that the only way to get a site tested is to submit it to the re-evaluation process ?
If so, this seems mis-leading in two ways, or confusing at least :
1. The statement that says “… It has now been scheduled for testing.” If that is not true, it should be removed.
2. The re-evaluation instructions (on the ‘are you the site owner page ?’) make it clear that this is for a site-owner who objects to the category it has been given (Do you think your Web site’s rating is inaccurate? ). It does not seem to apply to ‘untested’ sites and there is no mention of untested sites on that page.
Are there any instructions about getting a site tested ? Maybe I’ve missed them.
Maybe it would be good for Symantec to inform the owners of sites (from whois) that are scheduled for testing. At present I do not know if I should sit back and wait or if I need to do something.
regards,
Conor
Does this owner verification process work with web-forwarding ?
I am trying to verify that I am the owner of a number of websites (in order to get them tested). I have done the verification process successfully on a couple. But now I cannot get it to verify one that is web-forwarded. It keeps on asking me to put the auth file into the root directory of the website. In fact this is a sub-folder of a larger website. I initially put the file in the same folder as the index.htm file. (no success). I have also copied the file to the root directory of the main website (no success).
Has anyone managed to verify themselves as the owner of a forwarded website ?
Thanks.
Another question ref Safe Web.
Do we need to submit every domain name to Safe Web for testing ? (via the user verification process)
Or is it just the website that is tested, and so all the aliases and forwarding etc will get the same rating automatically ?
(and related to the question above, is there a problem with getting forwarded-websites verified or am I just doing something wrong ?)
Thanks
For sites rated 'gray, we require the site owners to verify ownership of their site in order to trigger an analysis and rating. This typically takes 2 weeks.
Every site that needs to be rated will need to be verified by site owner for it to have a rating.
We have a known defect for redirects where for some kinds of redirects we do not assign a rating for the aliases. This is an issue which is expected to get addressed in the next release. Can you please provide your specific sites so that I can check if your aliases will fall in this category.
thanks for the info, just checked the sites aghain and there finally got ticks on them, took more than 2 weeks but at least they are done now, thanks everyone for the assistance
Chandra, thanks for your response, and the info which is good and clear. I understand. But, so I can answer my clients, can you tell me why sites are rated grey in the first place ? (And I still think the advice on the 'siteowner' page doesn't clearly explain what you need to do in this circumstance. Maybe that could be clarified in the next release too ?)
My sites that are failing to 'get auth file' are www.annesatow.co.uk and www.jamesharpham.co.uk. All advice welcome.
Bovtrigger - glad to hear you've got there ! Hope I will soon too.
kind regards,
Conor
Hi Conor,
A site is rated gray if Norton Safe Web has not analyzed that site. We have limited capacity ato analyze sites. We prioritize the sites for which we receive infection reports from our users and popular sites for analysis. So, it is always possible that some of your sites are not analyzed and have a gray rating.
Can you please give some more details about the problem you are facing in verifying ownership for your sites so that I can have thesomeone investigate it.
Meanwhile, I have queued your sites for analysis.

Your sites are rated now.

Dear Chandra,
Thanks for submitting these two sites of mine and getting them tested.
Here is the detail of the problem I had with them, as you requested :
The process of verifying ownership requires me to 'get the auth file' and upload it to the root directory of the website. Then verify ownership.
I did this with no trouble for about 12 of my websites.
However for these two (www.annesatow.co.uk and www.jamesharpham.co.uk) it would not verify ownership. It could not find the auth file which I had uploaded.
These two sites are web-forwarded to a folder on my domain (www.conormaxwell.com). They are the only ones of mine that are web-forwarded
It kept on asking me to put the auth file into the root directory of the website. I initially put the file in the same folder as the index.htm file. (no success). I also copied the file to the root directory of my main website (no success).
It seems it cannot follow the path to a forwarded website in order to find the auth file and verify it.
Hope this helps in your investigation.
Thanks for all your help.
kind regards, Conor
Dear Chandra,
Just to say that all my sites have been tested now.
I verified ownership of twelve of them on 8th May,and they have been done (and regsitered as safe thankfully !) by 21 May, just under two weeks, as you said.
Thank you,
Conor
