How long should a "Copy my Hard Drive Take" -- and my experiences doing it

I finally accomplished my goal of doing a Copy My Hard Drive to a new 500 gig drive.  Even though the old drive only had about 60 gig of stuff on it, it took about 8-hrs to run.  Is this normal?  It seems to have worked fine but that seems like a very long time.

One other tip, after doing this once and trying to boot from the new drive it hung on the Windows startup screen and it baffled me as to what might be wrong.

Using compmgmt.msc I noticed that there was a hidden drive of only about 15 mb.  It had no drive letter and was FAT.  I figured it had some Dell files on it that were being accessed during startup.  Turns out I was right.

So, I reformatted the new drive and created a very small partition, 50 mb, I did a Copy my Drive of the hidden drive to this partition and then the full Copy My Drive to the main partition.  Again, it took 8-hrs.

Another thing to be careful about is the jumper settings and ribbon cable connections.  When you first put in the second drive you have to make sure you set it to Slave and connect it to the black ribbon connector (the one that's probably connected to your old drive). But, when you make the new one the main drive you have to set it to Master and set the old one to Slave and change it's ribbon connector too (the Slave connector is gray).

But, it now works fine.

My advice is to make sure you look for any hidden directories that your manufacturer might have put on there and make sure you copy them too.  And, pay careful attention to jumper settings and ribbon connectors.

Good luck to all.
