I use Internet Security 2008. I have an 80gB hard drive with about 50gB of stuff on it. My computer has a 2.85gHz Pentium 4 CPU and 2 gB of RAM. I tried to run Speed Disc Optimizer and, after about 3 hours, had to stop it to go to work.
John, sometimes it can take seemingly forever. Norton and MS have different defrag strategies. In fact, you can pick different strategies for Norton. If the strategy being used currently is different than the last strategy (most frequently used at the front versus most frequently used at the end), it can be a really long re-organization. Unless you have to take your computer with you, just let it complete its defragging while you’re at work (or asleep).
I don’t know how actively NIS 2008 is engaged in sig detection of every system file being examined and/or moved during a defrag session, but when I defragged, I would disconnect from the internet, turn off the AV and Firewall, and then launch the defrag. Purely subjective, but it seemed to speed things up.
Oh, and also turn off Norton Product Protection. It’s very late, my vision is blurring, and I forget what it’s called in NIS 2008. Maybe someone visiting this thread will remember.
