How to backup additional file types?

I am trying to get Norton to include some additional file types in its backup.    I can see that you can edit the existing broad categories (eg Office Documents) but my files do not fit any of these categories.   I would like to either create new categories; or just have an Other category - but the Other category does not allow you to add file types.

 

How do I do this?

What type of files are you trying to add?

 

You can put the extension in any category and as long as the category is checked to be backed up we will back up the file.  The file extension doesn't have to match the actual label for the category as each category really just represents the list of extensions and don't really indicate what the types of files really are. 

 

You could re-arrange all of your music file extensions and put them into the pictures category for example, and they would be backed up as expected under pictures.

 

We currently do not support adding categories, or editing the Other category as that is more for custom additions of files that are not in any category.

Bizarre!!   I have a whole range of different types of file:  C and Perl programs,    files for my Personal Information Managers and so on.   They don't fit any particular category - it would be much more sensible to either add to the Other category or to create new categories for them.  Why don't you support this

And I now have an additional problem - when I go to the Backup sets screen on the What tab,  the Edit File Extension links are greyed out.    I have ticked the Advanced Options so they are visible but I cannot click on them.

 

What's going on.

Due to scan reasons we can't allow modification during the scan. If you wait until the scan has completed you will be able to modify the category extensions. 

 

Also I have noted your desire for the other category to be modifiable. We already have plans like this for the next revision. Do you envision something similar to the current dialog or something different we could possibly consider?

Great.   A hover tip over the greyed out links would be good to say 'Cannot change whilst scan running' or something would be helpful.

 

And good news that you are looking at making the Other Category modifiable.   I can't remember the dialog box (it was on my daughter's laptop that she has taken back to college) so I can't comment.   But good that you guys are listening to us users.  I'm impressed.
