How To blacklist a website in nis2011

Guys how do i blacklist or block a site so that norton block it and doesn't allow it to open.

Or you can block through parental control either on nis11 or your router.

editing the hosts file is a good workaround for an expert but can cause problems if someone wants to eventually access the website.

I would use parental controls.

https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/loginStart.fs offers free parental controls!!! ;]

Guys how do i blacklist or block a site so that norton block it and doesn't allow it to open.

Edit:using the router parental control or keyword blocker will effect all computers the network. I would use that to blacklist sites as its network wide.

Well, you can block a website under the 'General Rules' however since NIS doesn't understand wildcards, you'd need to enter a website for each part of the domain.

For example, just blocking www.google.com won't block access to http://groups.google.com. If NIS allowed things like http://*.google.com then it would be much easier. Instead, you'd need to enter both URLs separated by a space.

In any case, here are the steps you'd need to take if you don't want to download Parental Controls:

  1. Click 'Settings' on the main UI
  2. Click and expand 'Network Settings'
  3. Click 'Configure' next to 'Advanced Settings'
  4. Click 'Configure' next to 'General Rules'
  5. Click 'Add'
  6. Choose 'Block' and click 'Next'
  7. Choose 'Connections to and from' and click 'Next'
  8. Choose 'Only the computers and sites listed below' and click 'Add'
  9. Choose 'individually', enter the URLs separated by a space in the box and click 'OK'
  10. Click 'Next' when finished adding websites
  11. Choose 'All' for the protocol to block and click 'Next'
  12. Choose your preferred logging option and click 'Next'
  13. Give the rule a meaningful name and click 'Next'
  14. Click 'Finish' ignoring the red warning
  15. Select your new rule and click 'Move Up' until it is at the top
  16. Click 'Ok' to commit the new rule
  17. Click 'OK' on the remaining windows

Thank you, MrSmite!!

I spent hours on the web trying to figure out how to block a website that kept popping under the site I was visiting. Then I figured that NIS2011 should be able to do it, but I couldn't figure it out for myself.

One thing I learned on my searches is that if you enter a URL, there has to be a reverse DNS search to find the IP number, which slows things down just a tad bit.

Then I discovered http://tejji.com/ip/url-to-ip-address.aspx. That site has several handy tools, including converting URLs to IP addresses. Very handy. So I was able to enter the IP address in NIS2011, and the blocking works perfectly.

Hi.

Also Flagfox for Firefox do the job for showing the IP automatically.

Hi Folks,

I would like to mention something on this. Modifying the NIS firewall is not the best way to accomplish website blocking. The more rules you add to the firewall makes things far more complicated. NIS then has many more firewall rules which it is forced to apply every time you connect to a website for example.

Modifying firewalls should be done with great care and only when absolutely needed.

I would highly suggest something like Norton online family which is designed for this sort of thing. If you don't want to use this, there are many other software applications othere which is designed to do this sort of thing.

Also be aware that at some point an upgrade to NIS will wipe out and remove any custom firewall rules you might have added.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen
