How to block all traffic from other computers on the network?

Hi,

How to I block the other computer on the same network from see my computer?  I do not want any computer on my home network to assess my computer in any way.  What firewall setting do I set for this?

Hi joestay,

If you are using Norton Internet Security go to the Network Security Map and click [EDIT] under Network Details.  Then [EDIT] the Trust Level, choosing "Restricted."  This will block any device on your network from accessing your PC.

I'm using NIS 2010.

What's the difference between protected and restricted in the network setting?

Thanks for the help so far.

Excellent question.  The Norton Help Center has always been ambiguous as to what the "Protected" status actually means.  When Norton detects that you are on an unsecured wireless network it will automatically set the trust level to "Protected," which will block printer and file sharing if you have it enabled.  Obviously, if this is the default for an open wifi network, it is a very secure trust level.  "Restricted" blocks all other computers from your PC completely.  Sorry I can't be more specific as to what types of communications "Protected" would allow.  Both settings block known attacks and unexpected traffic.

From the Norton Help Center:

FULL TRUST

Adds the network to the Full Trust list

All traffic that your computer receives from a Trusted network is filtered and allowed through firewall. However, known attacks and infections are still monitored. You should select this setting only when you are sure that the network is completely safe.

SHARED

Adds the network to the Shared list

All traffic that your computer receives from a Shared network is filtered. Only shared resources on your computer, such as files, folders, and printers are allowed. You should select this setting if you want the firewall to protect you from all traffics except those that pertain to file and printer sharing.

PROTECTED

Adds the network to the Protected list

A network is in the Protected Trust Level when it is not classified as Trusted, Shared, or Restricted.

You remain protected from known attacks and all unexpected traffic.

RESTRICTED

Adds the network to the Restricted list

The devices that are on Restricted network cannot communicate with your computer. However, you can still use the network to browse Web sites, send email messages, or transmit other communications.
