I'm presuming you are using NIS 2008 here!
I'm new to NIS2008, but not av/security suites. With NIS 2008 I don't think you can, as far as I have been able to tell. I too want to see when the last update occurred, but (correct me if I am wrong anyone), you cannot.
From NIS2008 Home: click on the Norton Internet Security tab then click on the following: Settings/Automatic LiveUpdate/Configure. On the configuration screen the default setting is for Automatic LiveUpdates. Leave this as is, but check the box underneath "Notify me when updates are available". Then press OK if you are finished, or Apply if you want to make other changes in the general Settings area.
That way at least you know that LiveUpdate is indeed working, as you will be asked periodically to authorise any updates.
However, this is a bit annoying, as the process is no longer automatic! It requires you to respond to a dialogue box asking if you wish to update, and then install any updates LiveUpdate finds. LiveUpdate will indeed inform you that there are new updates whenever they are available without having to run LiveUpdate from the Home screen, but this defeats the purpose of automatic updates - or at least automatic updates that require no user input.
I too would like to see the date and time of the last update performed, as it means I can monitor that LiveUpdate is indeed doing its job. Again, I may be wrong but NIS2008 is quite easy to navigate and explore, and I cannot find any setting that allows this.
At least with "Notify me when updates are available" one is able to monitor the process. I would much prefer the option of totally automatic updates which did not require my permission but provided me the details of when they occurred. This is pretty standard with most of the competition as I'm sure many are aware.
I don't especially want to have LiveUpdate malfunction and not know it until I get red warnings on the home screen! By that stage, my security may be compromised...
I actually contacted Symantec via the "Leave Feedback" button to recommend that either an update to NIS2008 incorporate the ability to show the date/time of the last update, or at the very least this feature be incorporated in NIS2009.
Essentially I would like proof from the program itself that LiveUpdate is working beyond a green "secure" on the home page; it's quite reassuring whilst being online to see that the definition files are being updated regularly (time, date, size of the update), I too share your concern Howard.
Again, please correct me if I am wrong anyone but I do not think this is possible in NIS2008 except by the method I use, and the information is only present whilst performing it - there is no record afterward. Not amazingly satisfying, and it requires user interaction. I would like to believe that everything is fine and Automatic LiveUpdate is doing its job behind the scenes in fully-Automatic mode (and I'm sure it is 99.9% of the time), but it would go a long way to reassuring me that it was if one could view the last update time/filesize SOMEWHERE.
A suggestion that would not complicate the layout too much: currently on the home page, when any of the relevant areas are clicked on (protection updates, spyware definitions especially) a dialogue box appears. A small button or link titled "View last update" could easily be incorporated, which would open another dialogue box and show the details of the last update.
But otherwise I'm very happy with NIS2008, I trialled a number of current security suites and ended up buying this.
I NEVER allow any software to do automatic updates.
Looking thru Live Update's directory one can see what are files that likely reflect each time LU was run.
Actually, to be accurate, I need to rephrase my query as
"How to determine date and time last LiveUpdate was run during which changes were made to the system?"
If you have the option of quick scanning after an update is received turned on, the Protection Activities in the Log Viewer will give you an idea when an update was performed if you are using AU. Each Quick Scan was preceded by an update.
I agree though there should be an Update log included with the other logs.
Virus definition updates are released every 8 hours. So if you have your system turned on and Automatic LiveUpdate is enabled, you can expect to get an update thrice a day.
I said that I do not allow automatic update,
If you’re running LiveUpdate manually, then you already know when you ran it! Since definition updates are released thrice a day, there’s a very good chance that something on your system will certainly get updated when you run LiveUpdate.
