I recently installed Norton Mobile Security (Ver 3.14.0.308) on my company provided Samsung android based cellphone on a corporate license with Norton. The app continues to bombard me with scan is OK notifications for every app that is installed or every app that is updated automatically from Google Play Store. Likewise every time I power cycle my phone it advises me that Scan is Complete and "device is protected".
I only care if Norton Mobile Security finds something wrong and I am too busy to have to read and clear the multiple notfications of scans that are safe. I installed this app to protect my phone from viruses / malware and am finding myself very annoyed at this software.
I have gathered some additional info which I have emailed to nms_feedback@symantec.com
NMS About on my phone shows the version is 3.16.0.3179 and I have not initiated or installed any updates but my wife's phone (also S3 with Android 4.3) has NMS v3.15.0.3134 and this still displays the notifications and icon as before. Both phones had previously been identical and both previously showed the same notifications and icon.
It appears that NMS has updated itself on my phone and the notifications and icon have been removed by design in the new version. Google Play Store is full of user complaints.
I have the opposite problem as the icon at the top of the screen and the notifications in the pull-down are no longer being displayed. This is on a Samsung S3 and happened in the past couple of days. Previously icon and notifications worked. I have tried power off, checked notifications is selected in NMS settings, run live update but still there is no icon or notifications. I can manually run a scan and everything is good. NMS is listed under running applications from the system settings.
But if you do not swipe that notification away, it will just update with the next install or update. It will not create another notification. That is the only work around I can suggest for now.
FYI It appears the NMS setting for Ongoing Notifications adds an additional notification when you swipe down. This one you cannot swipe away. It also adds a small Norton icon in the notification area at the top of your screen. This just lets you know that Norton is running and protecting your device.
Thanks for hanging with me to help out Peterweb. Below is example of the messaging that I have been referencing...whether I manually update an app or if playstore automatically updates an app I get something like that saying "<application name> is safe". I really only care to see <application name> is unsafe type messages.
Is this image what you are referring to? The only notification in this image is the top one with the little Norton icon. And this image was taken after multiple app installs and updates, with only the one Norton notification showing. The rest are from the Google Play Store app. To stop those you need to go to the Play Store app settings and turn off those notifications.
Thanks Peterweb, It is the notifications that I see when I pull down from the top of the screen. I get one of these notifications for each and every app that automatically is updated during the course of the day.
These require me to manually clear. I find that interaction as unnecessary and annoying . As a user, I should only be advised if something was wrong not for every transaction. It seems that many app programmers feel that it is ok to bombard users with constant notifications and this is not ok. Users should be able to dial up or down the frequency and situation of notificaitons, NMS not being an exception. I can live with a heads up its working once I turn on the device but this other "everything is OK" messaging is over the top. Thats two cents but I have a busy life and a busy job and this hyper interaction is not ok for me. I only want exception notifications.
Am not really sure what is disabled when I disabled Ongoing Notifications?
The App Advisor function does check apps before you download them. If you turn it off, the apps will still be scanned by NMS, but after it is downloaded.
What exactly are you concerned about? Is it the notification you see when you pull down from the top of your screen? I see only one for Norton even after installing multiple apps. I do see many from the Play store telling me the apps have been installed/updated, but that would be a Play Store setting to stop those.
If it is the momentary flash across the top of the screen, it only follows other notifications that the app is downloading, and then the app is being installed, and then the app has been installed.
I would suggest that one would want to know what is happening on your device. I like to know when things are happening in the background. Also nice to know your security product is working when you first turn on the device.
Hello Peterweb, thanks for the very quick response. I failed to mention I had already swiped that "Ongoing notifications" to the left and it is in grey status and yet the notifications continue to roll in.. It has been off for days but doesn't appear to halt the notifications.
I was going to consider to disable the App Advisor "For Google Play" but I read that that if I disable it it would not scan the apps downloaded from google play. I would like NMS to scan any apps downloaded from Google play, albeit without a notification that all is OK.
I also was considering going into my Samsung /Android settings in the Application section to Application Manager to Norton Mobile Security and disable notifcations there but was concerned I would then disable any notifications from NMS that it did find something wrong.
